Roundup: Enochs girls water polo advances in playoffs
Enochs High defeated Turlock 7-5 Tuesday in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division I girls water polo match as postseason competition got into full swing.
Avery Peterson had four goals, while Madeline Dean added two and Greta Viss one. Goalie Mia Viss totaled 18 saves to fend off the 10th-seeded Bulldogs, who were led by Hannah Groteguth and Allison Serratos with two goals apiece.
The No. 7 Eagles will face No. 2 seed St. Francis-Sacramento on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Jesuit High in Carmichael.
In another Division I score, Lincoln-Stockton defeated Gregori 15-4.
Golden Valley 18, McNair 5 in Merced – Anna Neufeld scored four of her game-high six goals in the first quarter as the No. 6 Cougars jumped out to a big lead on their way to a comfortable win over the 11th-seeded Eagles (16-5). Golden Valley advances to take on two-time defending Division II champion Oakdale on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Johansen.
Merced 16, Beyer 7 in Merced – Kathryn Elgin scored six goals as the No. 7 Bears opened with a decisive win over the 10th-seeded Patriots. Merced will face No. 2 Vintage Thursday in Napa.
Boys soccer
Modesto 4, Davis-Yolo 2 at Modesto High – The fifth-seeded Panthers remained undefeated, getting two goals from Robert Salcedo to advance to the second round. Modesto (18-0-4) will travel Thursday to take on No. 4 Napa, which needed penalty kicks to defeated No. 13 Granite Bay 3-2. Salcedo’s goal were assisted by Hilario Resendis and Jordi Hernandez. Ramiro Lopez, assisted by Serafin Alberto, also scored for the Panthers, as did Alberto on a penalty kick. Goalie Anthony Mejia registered seven saves.
Atwater 3, Gregori 0 in Atwater – The Falcons (23-1-4) dispatched Gregori (11-8-3) in business-like fashion, advancing to the quarterfinals in Division I. The Falcons outshot Gregori 25-2 and didn’t allow a shot on goal in a dominant effort. No. 3 Atwater will host No. 6 Lincoln, which defeated Franklin-Elk Grove 2-0.
Tracy 3, Golden Valley 0 in Tracy – The ninth-seeded Cougars trailed 2-0 at halftime and couldn’t recover in a Division II loss to the Bulldogs.
Cosumnes Oaks 1, Merced 0 in Elk Grove – Ethan Krebsscored in the first 10 minutes, and the No. 3 Wolfpack made it stand, gaining revenge after the Bears, seeded 14th, knocked them out in the Division II semifinals a year ago.
Also in Division II, No. 4 Pitman defeated Bella Vista 2-0 and will host No. 5 Ponderosa, a 2-1 winner over Del Oro, on Thursday. Downey’s season ended with a 6-0 loss to No. 2 Folsom.
In Division III, No. 2 Oakdale needed overtime to beat Mira Loma 3-1, third-seeded Patterson defeated Burbank 4-0, and No. 6 East Union knocked off 11th-seeded Ceres 2-1. Patterson will host East Union on Thursday, and Oakdale will entertain No. 7 Rio Americano, a 2-1 winner over Cordova.
Dixon 2, Pacheco 2 (4-2 PKs) in Los Banos – Brian Nevarez scored two goals for the Panthers, but Dixon tied the score with three minutes to play and outlasted Pacheco in penalty kicks in Division IV. Also in D-IV, Sierra defeated Lindhurst 2-1 and will play at No. 3 Livingston on Thursday.
Girls tennis
Central Catholic 5, Pioneer 4 in Modesto – The Raiders advanced to Monday’s Division III semifinals, where they’ll face the Los Banos-Yuba City winner. Central Catholic was swept in three doubles matches, but Amie Ardis, Anna Ballatore, Faith Masellis, Rosella Rangel and Alyssa McPhee grabbed five of six singles matches to secure the win for the Raiders. In another first-round D-III match, El Capitan beat Oakdale 6-3.
Pleasant Grove 6, Modesto 3 at Modesto High – Four of six singles matches were closely contested, and the Eagles won three. No. 1 Yunah Kim and No. 3 Chalalai Eggen won easily in singles for the Panthers, while No. 2 Nike Patel won 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. In other first-round Division I matches, Granite Bay defeated Gregori 9-0, and Pitman defeated Franklin 8-1.
MMC tournament – Enochs freshman Danielle Zamora won the Modesto Metro Conference singles title, beating Modesto senior Yunah Kim. In doubles, Downey’s tandem of freshman Bella Mendez and junior Amber Walsh defeated Enochs’ Brittany McNeily and Katie Dunn. Champions and runners-up will represent the MMC at the section tournament Thursday and Friday at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville.
Volleyball
Pitman, 3, Sonora 2 in Turlock – Postseason doesn’t officially get underway until Thursday with outbracket games, but there were a few regular-season matchups that had a playoff feel. The Pride (25-6) and Wildcats (27-4) closed the regular season in a nonleague affair for the second consecutive season and once again didn’t disappoint fans.
After playing to a five-set thriller in 2014, when both teams reached the state championship round – Sonora winning the D-IV title and Pitman falling in the D-I finale – they did it again Tuesday night. Once again the Pride won, 21-25, 23-25, 25-13, 25-12, 15-13.
For Pitman, Whitney Barnes had 13 kills while teammate Yisel Perez totaled 13 Kiyanna Torres had 46 assists, Lauren Solis registered 22 digs and Kaylin Randhawa had six blocks. For the Wildcats, Riley Patterson had a game-high 20 kills, Kiana Pisula had 27 assists, Riley Henington finished with 17 digs and two aces, and Kelsie Evans had two blocks.
Hilmar 3, Escalon 2 in Escalon – The Yellowjackets dug themselves out of an 0-2 hole and beat their Trans-Valley League rival 20-25, 24-26, 25-20, 25-18 15-10. Emily Baptista had 33 kills, Hannah Pearce had 55 assists and Avery Martin had 44 digs. For the Cougars, Kylee Irwin-Paz totaled 17 kills, setter Cydney Keener had 50 assists and libero Taylor Laugero finished with 20 digs.
Beyer 3, Modesto 0 at Downey – The Patriots and Panthers met on a neutral court Tuesday to determine the Modesto Metro Conference’s No. 3 playoff seed, behind league champ Gregori and No. 2 Enochs. Beyer rolled to a 25-9, 25-19, 25-21 win over the Panthers. Cathryn Starck led Beyer with 11 digs and six kills, and Camryn Wong had 15 digs. Aliyah Smith had 14 assists, Savannah Macias had four blocks and Dani Ranzo had six aces. Sara Gonzalez also had six kills for the Pats. Alyssa Cover had 11 assists for Modesto, while teammates Tori Galloway and Jennifer Pedretti had four kills each. Alexandria Yaum had eight digs and Cover and Galloway had two aces apiece. Naomi Wenstrup had one block.
