MJC women's soccer team, preps gear for big Saturday
MJC SOCCER TEAM VIES FOR STATE FINAL FOUR
The second-seeded Modesto Junior College women’s soccer team will play for a berth into the state final four today when it meets 11th-seeded Cosumnes River College at MJC’s west campus at 2 p.m. The Pirates beat Mendocino College 1-0 in double overtime on Tuesday. The Pirates have played Cosumnes River twice this year, winning 5-2 on Oct. 7 and 2-1 on Nov. 3. In the game earlier this month, Jaimee Rocha scored in the 77th minute to put MJC ahead for good. If the second-seeded Pirates (20-1-2) win today, they would meet the winner of the other NorCal semifinal between top-seeded Fresno and No. 5 Sierra. The NorCal final and state championship game will be held Dec. 5-7 at Mount San Antonio College.
BUSY DAY OF HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS ACTION
State and Sac-Joaquin Section champions will be crowned today during a heavy day of high school sports. The Modesto Christian football team will try to win a section Division VI title when it meets Capital Christian at 6 p.m. at the Lodi Grape Bowl. The game will be a rematch of September’s Week 1 game won by Capital Christian in the final seconds. Stone Ridge Christian of Merced will play for the Division VII football title in Lodi at 1 p.m. In cross country, the CIF State Meet will be held at Fresno’s Woodward Park. A number of Modesto-area athletes will be vying for state titles, including 10 runners from Stanislaus County – nine from Riverbank and one from Hughson. In volleyball, Pitman, Sonora and Turlock Christian will play NorCal volleyball second-round matches. Pitman plays San Ramon Valley at home and Sonora also has a home contest against The Harker School, a college prep school in San Jose.
