Hilmar season ends with loss to No. 1 seed
Hilmar High School volleyball coach Patty Harris felt much better about this one.
The Yellowjackets’ season came to an end with a 25-21, 25-18, 25-15 setback to top-seeded Notre Dame in the first round of the CIF Northern California Division IV volleyball playoffs Tuesday night.
Harris felt her team performed better than it did during a blowout loss to Sonora in the Sac-Joaquin Section title game last week at UC Davis.
“We played much better,” Harris said. “We were out there having fun. We were relaxed instead of being shut down in the section game.”
Emily Baptista led Hilmar (38-10) with 17 kills and one block. Setter Haylee Pearce had 27 assists.
“We had nothing to be ashamed of,” Harris added. “We made it to sections and NorCals two years in a row.”
Eagles flying high – Turlock Christian, the three-time reigning section D-VI champion, started slowly but rallied for a 3-1 win at home over Fall River to open the NorCal playoffs. The third-seeded Eagles outlasted the visitors 23-25, 30-28, 25-23, 25-18. Turlock Christian (21-17) will meet No. 2 seed Anderson Valley in the semifinals Saturday night at 7 p.m.
Stone Ridge Christian of Merced (26-5), which fell to Turlock Christian in the section final, rebounded with a 3-0 win over Liberty Christian in Redding. The Knights, who won 25-17, 25-19, 25-18, face San Francisco Waldorf.
Sonora sweep – Sonora, the Mother Lode and section Division IV champion, rolled 3-0 over Healdsburg at Castle Gym. The No. 2-seeded Wildcats (34-5), who prevailed 25-12, 26-24, 25-21, advance to the quarterfinals Saturday night against Harker of San Jose.
Basketball
Overtime win – Camille Roberts’ running three-pointer with 1.2 seconds left in regulation forced overtime, which eventually resulted in Cal State Stanislaus’ 81-76 nonleague win over Notre Dame de Namur at Fitzpatrick Arena. The Warriors (2-1) took the lead to stay on a three-point play in OT by Jasmine Washington (15 points) as the Warriors won despite being outrebounded 48-32.
Washington and Roberts (12 points), both Turlock products, led Stanislaus. The Warriors forced 30 turnovers, though Notre Dame’s Nanea Woods dominated with 28 points and 13 rebounds.
