Enochs, Beyer volleyball teams off to winning starts in MMC play
Defending Modesto Metro Conference volleyball champion Enochs, the No. 3 team in The Bee’s large-school rankings, opened its 2015 league schedule with a 25-11, 25-11, 25-6 win over Davis on Thursday.
Raegan Seifert had 13 kills to lead the Eagles, while Ashley Maki had 19 assists. For the Spartans, Gizelle Romero had 20 digs.
Beyer High also got its league campaign off to a winning start, defeating Downey 25-20, 25-21, 13-25, 25-16. For the Patriots, Aliyah Smith had 18 assists, Cathryn Starck totaled 12 kills, and Bailey Gallagher and Savannah Macias had four aces each. Downey’s Camrynn Shelley had 14 digs and Sydney Bettencourt finished with 10 assists.
Gregori 3, Escalon 1 at Gregori – Alyssa Bartlett had 30 assists and Emily Joseph added 17 kills and 17 digs in the Jaguars’ 21-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-15 win over Escalon. For the Cougars, Taylor Laugero had 25 assists and two aces, while Kaylee Irwin-Paz finished with 14 kills and two blocks.
Escalon entered the match No. 4 in The Bee’s small-school rankings, while Gregori was No. 4 among large schools.
Turlock 3, Tracy 1 at Tracy – Bulldogs setter Julia Handy had 28 assists to help her team to an 18-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-22 victory over Tracy. Turlock, No. 2 behind crosstown rival Pitman in The Bee’s large-school rankings, got 12 kills from Jadyn Tubbs and six blocks from Bella Bush.
Ripon 3, Big Valley Christian 0 at Ripon – The No. 5 small-school Indians got 18 assists from setter Stephanie Petlansky and 10 kills from Samantha McCreath in a 25-14, 25-16, 25-20 win over No. 10 Big Valley Christian.
Central Catholic 3, Sierra 0 at Modesto – The Raiders started Valley Oak League play with a 25-21, 25-8, 25-14 win over the Timberwolves. Melissa Zanotto had 15 assists, Jacqueline Yost had 12 kills and Alyssa Mayberry finished with 11 digs.
Tennis
Gregori 8, Davis 1 at Gregori – Sasha Origel defeated Mia Maceira 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles match as the Jaguars cruised to an MMC victory. The Spartans’ win came from Estephanie Maciel, who defeated Rosheil Dahuya 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 2 singles match.
Enochs, Downey sweep – The Eagles won all nine of their matches against Beyer in straight sets, as did the Knights in their MMC match against Johansen.
Turlock 8, Merced 1 at Turlock – The Bulldogs had little trouble in this Central California Conference matchup. Only one match went to three sets: Turlock’s Maya Young defeated Jul Tiu 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 in the No. 3 singles contest.
Pitman 6, Atwater 3 at Atwater – The Pride and Falcons split their six singles matches, with four matches being extended to a third and deciding set, in a competitive CCC matchup.
Pitman’s Abi Wilson defeated Catrina Velarde 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles match, while Atwater’s Julie Dailey beat Yun Luu 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 2 encounter. The Pride’s Lane Hayman beat JoAnne Villegrana 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the No. 3 matchup, while teammates Karen Kahlon bested Dayana Argueta 6-3, 7-5, 6-1 in the No. 4 match. Atwater took the final two singles affairs, with Alyssa Gutierrez defeating Lizzy Nickerson 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 and Celeste Ornelas topping Makenna Boutelle 6-0, 6-7(4), 6-4 in the fifth and sixth singles matches, respectively.
Central Catholic 7, Oakdale 2 – The Raiders’ Marissa Lopez needed three sets to defeat Courtney Rodgers 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in a Valley Oak League matchup. Amie Ardis, Central Catholic’s No. 1 singles player, was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Danielle Brown. The Raiders’ top duo of Lauren Aja and Lisa Archuleta beat Haley Takaki and Amy Schenck 6-1 6-4 in the No. 1 doubles match. The Raiders are 6-0 in VOL play.
Central Valley 6, Livingston 3 at Livingston – The Wolves’ Taranpreet Kaur defeated Teresa Diaz 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 in a tightly contested No. 1 singles match, but the Hawks overcame that setback to win the match and improve to 3-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. Central Valley got singles wins from Jadah Jackson, Celeste Lepe, Chelsea Flores and Claudia Martinez to take control. The Hawks’ No. 1 doubles team of Vanessa Monroy and Amy Ngyen beat Avneet Uppal and Amalia Barragan 6-2, 6-4.
Girls golf
Enochs 244, Davis 313 at Dryden Park – Alyse Padilla (44), Angela Pierce (45) and Mbeneka Maithya (48) all carded rounds in the 40s to lead the Eagles. The Spartans’ Susan Foster (45) was the lone golfer on her team to break 60.
Hughson 235, Gustine 322 at Turlock Golf & Country Club – The Huskies’ Bailey Wieners shot a 53 to earn medalist honors in a nonleague match with the Redskins. Hughson improved to 4-1.
Boys soccer
Gustine 2, Le Grand 1 at Gustine – The Redskins got goals from Jesse Haro and A.J. Romero to defeat the Bulldogs in the Southern League opener for both schools. Rodrigo Lua scored for Le Grand.
