VOLLEYBALL RANKINGS

Large school

Comprised of teams from Central California Conference, Modesto Metro Conference, Valley Oak League and Western Athletic Conference. Records as of Wednesday’s matches.

1. (1) Pitman (11-1): Only loss to Central of Fresno, the Central Section’s second-ranked team, according to MaxPreps; Pride No. 4 in Sac-Joaquin Section.

2. (2) Turlock (16-2): The Bulldogs followed their runner-up finish in the Silver Division at Central California Classic with a 3-2 victory over Lincoln; ranked No. 7 in section.

3. (3) Enochs (7-6): The Eagles have lost five of their past six matches, but consider the caliber of foe: Pitman, Turlock, Escalon and Tracy.

4. (4) Gregori (8-2): The Jaguars defeated Escalon for the Bronze Division championship at the Central California Classic; hosted No. 4 small Escalon on Thursday.

5. (5) El Capitan (6-5): The Jaguars captured the Titanium Division at the Central California Classic with a victory over No. 7 small Big Valley Christian.

6. (6) Golden Valley (5-8): Defeated league rival Buhach Colony in the Copper Division final at the Central California Classic; next three matches: Central of Fresno, Turlock and Pitman.

7. (7) Oakdale (5-7): The Mustangs have lost three straight to Escalon, Pitman and Tracy but should find their footing in the Valley Oak League.

Others to watch: East Union (4-2), Manteca (2-3), Merced (5-7), Atwater (9-5), Central Catholic (4-3).

Small school

Comprised of teams from Trans-Valley League, Mother Lode League, Central California Athletic Alliance, and Southern League. Records as of Wednesday’s matches.

1. (1) Sonora (12-2): The Wildcats bounced back from a loss to No. 2 large Turlock with impressive victories over St. Mary’s and Lincoln; ranked No. 5 in section.

2. (3) Hilmar (6-4): Yellowjackets jump in the rankings after defeating No. 2 large Turlock en route to the Silver Division title at the Central California Classic.

3. (2) Bret Harte (9-3): The Bullfrogs tuned-up for their Mother Lode League opener at Calaveras with a sweep of Modesto Christian.

4. (4) Escalon (6-8): The Cougars were defeated by Gregori in the final of the Bronze Division at the Central California Classic but responded with a sweep of Ripon Christian.

5. (5) Ripon (4-3): The Indians began Trans-Valley League play with a sweep of Hughson; hosted No. 7 small Big Valley Christian on Thursday.

6. (7) Turlock Christian (7-5): Captured the Steel Division championship at the Central California Classic with a victory over Chowchilla of the Central Section.

7. (nr) Big Valley Christian (2-3): Defeated Turlock Christian at the Central California Classic but stumbled against No. 5 large El Capitan in the Titanium Division final.

Others to watch: Stone Ridge Christian (9-7), Ripon Christian (4-6), Gustine (5-3), Hughson (3-5).
