Turlock volleyball bounces back against Lincoln of Stockton
Turlock suffered two losses at the prestigious Central California Classic, but The Bee’s second-ranked large-school volleyball team didn’t stay down long.
Julia Handy racked up 48 assists and Emily Romo had 20 kills in a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Lincoln of Stockton. The Bulldogs trailed after three games but rallied for their 16th win in 18 matches, 24-26, 25-14, 22-25, 25-22, 15-10.
Bella Bush anchored the defense with four blocks and Jadyn Tubbs had 17 kills for Turlock, which lost to Central of Fresno and Hilmar en route to a runner-up finish in the Silver Division.
The Trojans featured a sure-handed finisher in Amilya Thompson, who tallied a match-high 27 kills.
Sonora 3, St. Mary’s 1 – The Wildcats picked up an impressive victory over the Rams, a perennial Division II playoff team, 24-26, 25-17, 25-21, 25-19. Riley Patterson did it all for The Bee’s top-ranked small-school team, finishing with 17 kills, 17 digs and three aces. Setter Kiana Pisula had 33 assists.
Tracy 3, Enochs 1 – Rachel Martin had 12 kills and five blocks for Enochs in a 13-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-23 loss. Ashley Maki had 26 assists and six aces for the Eagles, ranked third in the first release of The Bee’s large-school rankings.
Modesto 3, Riverbank 0 – Alyssa Cover had 16 assists and 11 aces, and Sheng Xiong (10 digs) and Naomi Wenstrup (two blocks) shored up the defense in a 25-12, 25-7, 25-17 Panthers win.
Boys soccer
Modesto 4, Johansen 0 – Four players scored for the Panthers, who routed Johansen in their Modesto Metro Conference opener. Hernan Garcia, Hilario Resendis, Robert Salcedo and Serafin Alberto notched goals for Modesto. Anthony Mejia had six saves in the shutout.
Davis 2, Enochs 2 – Leo Hermosillo scored and set up Edin Chavez to help Davis secure a draw in its MMC opener.
Le Grand 2, Ripon Christian 0 – Rodrigo Lua scored two first-half goals, spoiling a sparkling debut by Ripon Christian goalie Lukas Vermeulen (15 saves).
Girls golf
Enochs 226, Gregori 252 – Mbeneka Maithya led another balanced performance by the Eagles (4-0) with a match-low 41 at Creekside. All five Eagles carded a sub-50 round, overpowering Lauren Arakelian (45) and the Jaguars (2-1).
Downey 300, Davis 322 – The Knights’ Samantha Smedshammer posted a match-low 42 to win a duel with Davis’ Susan Foster (49).
Hughson 241, Orestimba 254 – Bayley Wiemers and Ilianna Ramos helped the Huskies (3-1) knock Orestimba (4-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten in the Valley Foothill League. Wiemers tied the Warriors’ Joy Truniger for medalist honors with a 51, while Ramos finished hot on their heels with a 52.
Sonora 200, Linden 221 – Teammates Megan Popovich and Amanda Mena shared medalist honors with a 47 at Mountain Springs as the Wildcats improved to 3-1 in VFL matches.
Ceres 175, Central Valley 186 – The Hawks’ Janita Vongphoumy ran away with the medalist honor, carding a 4-over 32 at St. Stanislaus. Still, it wasn’t enough to beat the rival Bulldogs, who were led by Savannah Beltran’s 38.
Girls tennis
Central Catholic 8, Weston Ranch 1 – The defending Valley Oak League champions improved to 5-0 with another resounding victory. The Raiders swept singles behind Amie Ardis, Anna Ballatore, Faith Masellis, Rosella Rangel, Marissa Lopes and Alyssa McPhee.
Turlock 9, Atwater 0 – Turlock opened Central California Conference play with a sweep. The Bulldogs won all nine matches in straight sets, none more impressive than Michelle Gomez’s 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles.
Ceres 6, Livingston 3 – Livingston won the battle at the top of the singles ladder, but the Bulldogs’ depth showed in the Western Athletic Conference victory. Stephanie Garcia, Chelsea Heras, Jalani Blankenship and Alicia Villegas garnered singles victories for Ceres.
Los Banos 8, Patterson 1 – Los Banos ran the table in singles. Shirley Liu, Taylor Tarongo, Melanie Silva and Audrey Moreno surrendered just one game in straight-set victories.
Enochs 9, Johansen 0 – The Eagles dominated the Vikings, posting straight-set victories in all nine matches. Enochs surrendered only five games. Danielle Zamora, Maddy Lyn, Katie Dillon and the team of Maridace Domingo and Jordan Tam recorded 6-0, 6-0 victories.
Gregori 9, Beyer 0 – The Jaguars opened MMC play with an emphatic victory, sweeping the Patriots. Roshell Dahuya, Liah Kim, Emily Lacasse and Julia Lobo had the strongest showings, posting 6-0, 6-0 victories.
Boys water polo
Gregori 10, Downey 7 – Christian and Andrew Britton combined to score seven of Gregori’s 10 goals. Brett Dixon shouldered the scoring load for the Knights, rattling the cage for four goals. Downey is the defending MMC champion.
Johansen 11, Beyer 6 – Branston Lewis and Brian Evans bolstered the Vikings’ victory with five and three goals, respectively.
Girls water polo
Gregori 16, Downey 8 Megan Kelley and Elizabeth Taggar carried the day for the Jaguars. Kelley matched Downey with eight goals, while Tagger scored six.
Beyer 12, Johansen 5 – Seven players scored for the Patriots, led by Rebecca Bringhurst (three goals) and Bailey Hamilton (two).
