Central Valley opens quest for eighth straight boys soccer crown

The Central Valley boys soccer team, which has won its league title the last seven years in a row, opened Western Athletic Conference play with a 2-0 shutout of El Capitan of Merced at home in Ceres on Tuesday.

It was the second consecutive shutout for the Hawks, who beat Downey 1-0 last Thursday.

Emmanuel Jimenez scored both goals for Central Valley, while goalie Enrique Garcia had four saves. CV faces Pacheco in Los Banos on Thursday, while EC travels to take on Patterson.

Girls golf

Pitman’s Beckwith second – Pitman High’s Taylor Beckwith carded a 1-over 73, finishing two strokes behind winner Madeline Zunino of Lincoln, at the Hilmar Yellowjacket Invitational girls golf tournament, held at Micke Grove Golf Links in Lodi.

Beckwith’s teammate Diana Calzada and Bret Harte’s Hannah Ellsworth each carded 83, good for fifth place.

Buhach Colony’s Tianna Lee (85) and Gregori’s Karina Hart (87) were the only other local players to break 90. They finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

Girls tennis

Modesto 9, Johansen 0 – The Panthers didn’t drop a set in running away with a win over the Vikings in the Modesto Metro Conference opener. No. 1 singles player Yunah Kim, No. 2 Sheaqueen Hoskins and No. 6 Neve Foresti didn’t drop a game in their matches.

Downey 9, Beyer 0 – The Patriots, playing without three-time reigning Player of the Year Symone Jacques, who is concentrating on club tennis this season, didn’t win a set against the Knights in this MMC opener.

No. 1 singles player Amber Walsh, No. 2 Bella Mendez and No. 6 Pam Costa each won 12 consecutive games in their matches.

Enochs 9, Davis 0 – The Eagles made it a clean sweep as all three MMC matches ended with identical scores. Gregori had the bye.

Danielle Zamora, the No. 1 singles player for Enochs, was a 6-2, 6-2 winner. Teammates Brunia Boliscar (No. 4), Katie Dillon (No. 5) and Halie Gonzalez (No. 6) won without dropping a game, as did the No. 2 tandem of Lauren Turner and Hannah Lee and the No. 3 duo of Sofie Gonzalez and Riley Troupe.

The No. 2 singles match between Maddy Lyu and Estefania Maciel was the most competitive match in the entire league Monday. Lyu dropped the first set in a tiebreaker 6-7, then stormed back to win the final two sets 6-3, 6-1.

Volleyball

Atwater 3, Modesto 0 at Modesto – The Falcons cruised to a non-conference victory, winning 25-11, 25-18, 26-24. Jessica Pedretti led the Panthers with seven kills and five blocks, while teammate Alyssa Cover totaled 11 assists. Elizabeth Liddle finished with 15 digs and Sheng Xiong had five ace serves.
