Prep Rewind: Pisula, Patterson steer Sonora volleyball past Ripon
Kelsie Evans and Riley Patterson had 11 kills apiece as the Sonora volleyball team won its seventh match in five days.
The reigning CIF Division IV state champion improved to 10-1 on the season with a 3-1 victory Tuesday over Ripon 25-20, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22.
Kiana Pisula engineered the offense, racking up a match-high 30 assists. Patterson proved she’s more than just a finisher; the sophomore paced the Wildcats with 16 digs.
Evans also had four blocks and eight aces for Sonora, which went 6-1 at the High Sierra Tournament over the holiday weekend.
Ripon (3-3) was no pushover, extending the match with a victory in the third set. The Indians were led by the McCreath sisters, Sam and Madison. Sam McCreath blasted 16 kills, while Madison McCreath dropped in three aces. Ashlyn Eiseing had 26 digs and Lauren Weibe 28 assists for Ripon, which hosts Modesto on Thursday.
Sonora travels to Turlock for a highly anticipated clash of Stanislaus District powers. The Bulldogs are 8-0 with notable wins over St. Mary’s and Hilmar.
Escalon 3, Oakdale 1: Kylee Irwin-Paz had 16 kills on just 28 attempts and the Cougars’ defense was superb in a 26-24, 24-26, 25-12, 25-20 victory over the large-school Mustangs. Natalie Bianchi led three players with double-digit digs with 17.
Central Catholic 3, Modesto Christian 0: Ambria Schneringer and Melissa Zanotto (seven digs) had 11 assists apiece in a 25-19, 25-14, 25-14 victory for the Raiders. Jacqueline Yost had a nice all-around game for Central Catholic, finishing with 10 digs and six kills.
El Capitan 3, Beyer 0: Cathryn Starck had 11 digs, nine kills and four aces in a 25-13, 25-18, 25-13 loss to the Gauchos.
Soccer
Oakdale 3, Central Valley 2: Angel Lopez and Angel Aguilar found the back of the net in the Hawks’ loss.
Golf
Enochs 238, Downey 268, at Dryden Park: Mbeneka Maithya shot a 4-over-par 40 and Brittneigh Redfern wasn’t far behind at 42 as the Eagles handed Downey its first loss. Ana Casillas had a 48 and CC Cytanovich a 49 for Enochs, now 3-0 in the Modesto Metro Conference.
Gregori 253, Beyer 309: Lindsey Martin (44), Karina Hart (46) and Lauren Arakelian (49) anchored the Jaguars’ victory.
Buhach Colony 256, Turlock 262, at Rancho Del Rey: Turlock posted the two lowest scores in the Central California Conference showdown, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Buhach Colony’s depth. Brooke Vierra ran away with medalist honors with a 41 and Preth Singh carded a 46 for the Bulldogs.
Livingston 231, Ceres 239, at Rancho Del Rey: The Wolves’ Lexi Gonzalez and Ceres’ Abigail Nou shared medalist honors with matching 51s on the par-36 course. Livingston is 2-0 in Western Athletic Conference play, while the Bulldogs slip to 2-1.
Ripon 201, Sonora 215, at Mountain Springs: The Indians improved to 3-0 with a balanced effort. Breeana Alvarez led the way with a 53, sharing medalist honors with Sonora’s Megan Popovich. Claire Wever (51), Alex Gonzales (53), Sierra Atilano (54)and Samantha Carl (55) rounded out Ripon’s scoring.
Orestimba 163, Gustine 265, at St. Stanislaus: Warrior teammates Joy Truniger and Olivia Buzar anchored the rivalry rout with identical 39s.
Tennis
Central Catholic 8, Sierra 1: Anna Ballatore and Alyssa McPhee highlighted another dominant performance by the Raiders’ singles players, earning 6-1, 6-0 victories over their opponents.
Ceres 7, Patterson 2: The Bulldogs rolled in their Western Athletic Conference opener. Doubles carried the day. Ceres got wins from Aleena Amed and Azia Brewster, Shania Evans and Simran Kaur, and Sarah Cuevas and Bella Rosas.
Los Banos 7, Livingston 2: The Tigers won all six singles matches in straight sets. Kylee Cardoza, playing out of the No. 5 slot, posted the most impressive victory at 6-0, 6-1.
