Overtime decides playoff fate for two Stanislaus District No. 1 soccer teams

The Stanislaus District’s two No. 1 girls soccer teams needed overtime to pull out quarterfinals victories as Gregori, the top overall team in the Sac-Joaquin Section and No. 1 D-I seed, and Oakdale, the No. 1 team in Division IV, advanced to the semifinals after nail-biting wins.

The Jaguars fell behind early in the first half, then answered with a goal on a penalty kick. The Jaguars and No. 8 St. Francis ended regulation tied at 1-1 until a goal in the first half of overtime sealed the victory. The Jaguars advance to the semifinals for the second straight season and remains undefeated at 21-0-1.

Oakdale hosted Valley Oak League rival Central Catholic in a thriller. The Raiders scored first, the Mustangs answered with two goals. Central Catholic then scored with under two minutes left in the match to send it to overtime. In the extra frames, the Mustangs’ poise showed as the young team scored two goals to win and advance to the semifinals.

On Wednesday, Gregori hosts No. 5 West Park, which upset No. 4 Pleasant Grove in penalty kicks. Oakdale hosts No. 4 Ripon Wednesday.

Girls

Division I

No. 1 Gregori 2, No. 8 St. Francis 1 (OT): After St. Francis went ahead in the sixth minute, Oregon signee Kylie Farmer netted a penalty kick to tie the quarterfinals match at 1 goal apiece. The two sides remained locked at a goal apiece after regulation. Within the first three minutes of the first overtime, UC Merced-bound Grace Rodriguez raced to the ball and connected with freshman Mila Apodaca in the middle of the goal and the freshman converted the game winner. Jocelyn Malagon had 11 saves, including multiple key rejections to keep St. Francis off the board in the second half and overtime.

Division III

No. 13 Christian Brothers 2, No. 5 Beyer 1: Beyer finishes an impressive season 21-3-1 after falling in the quarterfinals to the 13-seed Christian Brothers. The Falcons held a 2-0 halftime lead and though the Patriots answered with one goal in the second half, they were unable to score the equalizer before the final 40 minutes was up.

Division IV

No. 1 Oakdale 4, No. 9 Central Catholic 2 (OT): The third meeting between VOL rivals Oakdale and Central Catholic was the best one yet as the two sides took a 2-2 tie into overtime. Oakdale scored twice in the first extra frame and held on in the second to secure the win. Dakota Burford, Layla Garcia-Gonzalez, Jezell Perez-Andrade and Sophia Garavaglia recorded assists and Burford found the back of the net twice while Kaia Cox and Shelby Mitchell added one goal each.

No. 4 Ripon 4, No. 5 Placer 2 (OT): The third Stanislaus District match to go into overtime saw Ripon take down Placer in a 4 vs 5 matchup. Ripon advances to the semifinals where it will travel to Oakdale Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Division VI

No. 1 Ripon Christian 7, No. 8 Millennium 0: The Knights scored at least five goals in their third straight contest Monday night in a blowout win over the eight-seed Falcons. Brooke Barnes scored four times to lead the team and three other players added one goal apiece. Goalkeeper Morgan Schenk recorded the shutout with three saves. Ripon Christian plays No. 5 Vacaville Christian Wednesday.
