The Bee's 2011 All-District Girls Basketball Team
FIRST TEAM
Camille Roberts, Turlock, Senior
The 5-foot-8 senior guard was a four-year player for coach Salinda Mabie, helping the Bulldogs to the Central California Conference title each season. She averaged 14.7 points, 3.8 assists, 3.1 steals and three rebounds as a senior, leading Turlock to a 22-6 record. Roberts scored a season-high 25 in a 60-28 win over Pitman, but her best all-around game might have been vs. Atwater: 13 points, eight assists, 10 steals and seven boards. Her career statistics include 1,127 points, 327 assists and 322 rebounds. Teammate Kayla Schumann was selected to the large-school team.
Alexus Tillman, Modesto Christian, Senior
After spending her junior season alongside The Bee's Player of the Year Brandi Henton, the 5-foot-6 Tillman took on a greater scoring role this winter while splitting time between point and shooting guard. She averages 11.5 points, five assists, 4.4 steals and 2.3 rebounds, and helps MC maintain its break-neck pace on the court. She began to heat up late in the season, averaging 15 points over the last eight games. Tillman scored a career-high 25 in a win over Hughson, and had 11 assists in a playoff win over Linden. It was the fourth time Tillman had at least 10 assists in one game.
Danielle Thompson, Modesto Christian, Senior
All the 6-foot-1 Thompson did in four years at MC is score, crash the boards and play stout defense — and play for winners. MC was 108-26 in the center's four seasons, including 47-0 in the Trans-Valley League. She averages 14.6 points, 8.2 boards, 2.2 blocks and 1.4 steals and has helped MC to three consecutive section championships. With the emergence of Charise Holloway as a frontcourt scorer, Thompson — a first-team selection as a junior and on the all-underclass team as a sophomore — had a greater defensive role after averaging 16.7 points as a junior.
Jasmine Washington, Pitman, Senior
No one knew what to expect from the Pride, given its graduation losses and the arrival of a new coach. Jasmine Washington provided the answer, as the 5-10 guard averaged 19.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, five assists and 4.4 steals to lead the Pride to a second-place finish in the CCC. Its only CCC losses were to champion Turlock. She twice scored 34 points in a game — league wins over Merced and Buhach Colony — while shooting 50 percent from the floor and 75 percent from the free-throw line. She also upped her scoring, rebounding and assists averages from her junior year.
Sharon Washington, Manteca, Senior
Sharon Washington is leaving high school the way every player would love to go — celebrating a league championship. The senior guard led the Buffaloes to the Valley Oak League after averaging 18 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.2 steals. She scored a season-high 25 in an early win over West, but her greatest run during her senior season might have been a five-game span where she averaged 22 points while leading the Buffs to five league wins. Washington also hit 33 3-pointers for the 22-5 Buffs, who were eliminated in the section Division 3 quarterfinals by Christian Brothers.
SECOND TEAM: LARGE SCHOOLS
Madisyn Gafford, Modesto, Senior
The 5-foot-10 forward departs the program with two captain's patches and three Modesto Metro Conference championships. She averaged a double-double as a senior, with 11.1 points and 10.9 boards a game. She led the Panthers to a 27-3 conference record in three seasons, and impressive wins this season over East Union and Sonora. Gafford was one of five players to average at least eight points for Modesto.
Kelci Haueter, Davis, Junior
The MMC's breakout player of the year, the 5-foot-10 forward averaged 14 points and 14.4 rebounds as the Spartans went 16-11 and were second in the MMC. Haueter, who spent time inside and on the perimeter in Davis' 4-1 scheme, also averaged 4.6 blocks, 2.7 assists and 3.2 steals. She shot 60 percent from the floor and had a career-high 27 rebounds against Modesto — one of four games with at least 20.
Kelli Keefe, Sonora, Senior
The 5-5 guard showed improvement in each of her four varsity seasons with the Wildcats: All-district underclass as a sophomore, and she is a large-school selection for the second year. She averaged 15.8 points, to go with her 2.8 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 3.5 steals. She finishes her career with more than 1,100 points, 175 treys, 250 assists and 350 steals. She was not held under nine points in a game this year.
Lexy Posz, East Union, Senior
There wasn't a more versatile, or perhaps more valuable player in the VOL than this multi-talented guard. A large-school selection as a junior, Posz improved every aspect of her game as a senior. She averaged 14.2 points, 4.1 assists, 6.9 rebounds and 3.3 steals while leading the Lancers to a second-place finish in the VOL and the section D3 quarterfinals. She also led EU to two wins over rival Manteca.
Kayla Schumann, Turlock, Senior
The 5-9 guard averaged 14 points,3.6 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.4 steals while playing opposite point guard Camille Roberts. A four-year varsity player, she departs the program with career totals of 1,033 points, 241 assists and 239 rebounds — as well as four CCC titles. She scored a season-high 27 vs. Atwater, and led Turlock to 16 wins in 17 games before it lost in the section D1 quarterfinals.
SECOND TEAM: SMALL SCHOOLS
Mikaela Alger, Ripon Christian, Junior
Most folks in the Southern League expected that the Knights were a year away from having an impact, since the bulk of this year's production was coming from underclassmen. The 5-11 center proved otherwise, averaging 15.1 points, 13.2 rebounds, 1.6 blocks and 1.4 steals while leading RC to the Northern California D5 playoffs. She shot 52 percent from the floor and 69 percent at the line for the 20-7 Knights.
Mariah Brown, Modesto Christian, Senior
After sitting her junior year, due to her transfer from Lincoln, Brown hit the court running after accepting a scholarship from Sacramento State. The 5-3 guard, who split the ballhandling duties with Alexus Tillman, is averaging 10.4 points, 3.3 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals for the Crusaders, who are playing for the NorCal D4 title this evening. She is averaging 16.5 points in MC's six playoff wins this season.
Vanessa Cagle, Modesto Christian, Senior
Cagle had an abbreviated junior season, due to a knee injury late in her sophomore year, but bounced back as a senior to become one of the district's top 3-point shooters. Cagle averaged 9.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.7 steals for the Crusaders, despite limited time due to many lopsided losses. She earned a scholarship from Corban University of Oregon, and hit 53 treys and shot 82 percent from the line as a senior.
Kendra Contente, Ripon, Senior
The four-year starter, and daughter of coach George Contente, the 5-9 guard was recognized as a three-time all-TVL pick. She averaged 10.8 points, 2.2 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 4.2 steals while leading the Indians to a second-place finish behind MC. She shot 42 percent from the floor, and tied her top scoring performance of the season with 20 points in an overtime loss to Linden in the D4 playoff opener.
Molly Farrar, Turlock Christian, Senior
There's not a more balanced team in the district than TC, which took its second consecutive trip to the NorCal playoffs. Farrar averaged 12.2 points, 4.4 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 3.9 steals. She averaged 14 points, scoring at least 10 each time she took the floor, in the final 12 games. The 5-9 guard had three-year totals of 833 points (9.9 a game), 311 steals (3.4), 488 rebounds (5.3) and 360 assists (3.9).
