Enochs girls soccer keeps second place in CCAL with senior day win
Members of the Enochs girls soccer team said they wanted to create experiences this season so that’s what first-year head coach Gilbert Ybarra helped them do.
A perennial playoff team and contender for the league title, Enochs wanted to make this season memorable.
They played futsal and indoor soccer together, had other team bonding activities outside of school and did their best to have a good time at practice.
“We’re trying to enhance the program,” Ybarra said. “This area has a lot of talent, and getting players to play together is huge.”
The fun off the field has translated to success on it. And there’s no better experience than winning.
The Eagles are 16-2-3 overall and 6-0-3 in Central California Athletic League games. It is their first season with more than 15 wins since 2017-18.
Enochs earned its 16th win on senior night, where they battled the cold, wind and rain to beat Downey, 3-1. They honored their nine graduating players before their final regular season home game at Mary Grogan Soccer Complex and at 3:30 it was go time. Senior Kaytlynn Nice started the scoring for the Eagles in the first half with a breakaway goal, her 18th on the season.
“She’s a captain on our team and she has been instrumental in all of our wins,” Ybarra said of the midfielder who leads the team in goals and assists.
Downey answered with the equalizer in the second half before senior Alexis Lighthall and freshman Grayson Wright-Graham found the back of the net for Enochs.
The Eagles remain unbeaten in league play and remain in sole possession of second place in the CCAL standings.
They take on first place Gregori Thursday in their final regular season game this season. After Thursday, they await their playoff fate. CCAL teams will have a week off before the postseason. Brackets will be released on the Sac-Joaquin Section website Wednesday, Feb. 12 and first round matches are Tuesday, Feb. 18.
“We’ve won a majority of our matches so I really feel like we’re firing on all cylinders,” Ybarra said. “I’m really looking forward to progressing further in the season.
