Hilmar High junior setter Stella Pires is having a career year in her third varsity season. She is posting career highs in every stat, including sets played (107), assists (979), assists per set (9.2) and digs (240). As of Friday, she is eighth in California in assists.
That career season continued in the CIF Northern California Division IV Regional Playoffs. Pires helped lead the Yellowjackets to a No. 2 seed and a NorCal championship with two sweeps and two four-set wins over the past two weeks. Hilmar will play in just its second ever state championship match Saturday against South Pasadena, the No. 2 seed from Southern California, at 11 a.m. at Santiago Canyon College.
In Hilmar’s NorCal opener against University Prep on Nov. 14, Pires recorded 28 assists, 10 digs and three aces to lead the team to a 25-18, 25-18, 25-21 sweep.
The fans noticed her performance, voting her The Bee’s Girls Player of the Week.
Pires came in first, collecting 86% of the votes in the weekly poll. She finished ahead of her teammate, Finley Rosa, and Big Valley Christian’s Jordan Beers, who were second and third, respectively.
