As the regular season winds down and the playoff picture becomes clearer, the Southern Athletic League saved its most important games of the season for last. Orestimba and Ripon Christian, two of the top three SL teams, faced off in the final week of April.

Though both teams are locked into the postseason, the winner of the series could gain a more favorable seed in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs. The Warriors took advantage, opening the week with a 3-0 win thanks in large part to the play of senior Devin Bettencourt.

In the first game of a two-game series with the playoff-bound Knights, Bettencourt started at pitcher, throwing a complete game shutout, striking out nine batters and allowing just three hits. He also drove in one of the Warriors’ three runs. The fans noticed his performance, voting him The Bee’s Boys Player of the Week.

Bettencourt finished first in the weekly poll after collecting 52% of the fan vote. He finished ahead of baseball players Braxton Thomas from Central Catholic and Hilmar’s Jason Pimentel, who finished in second and third, respectively.
