Modesto Christian opens the Holiday Hoop Classic with a win over Beyer

In its first home game of the season, the Modesto Christian boys basketball team didn’t disappoint.

The Crusaders (7-1) and Beyer High (6-5) played in front of coaches from the University of the Pacific, UC Riverside, Cal State East Bay and others at the first day of the Modesto Christian Holiday Hoop Classic.

The host Crusaders wasted no time impressing the home crowd, winning over the Patriots 85-41.

Modesto Christian sports an embarrassment of riches who all contributed in different ways. Junior guard BJ Davis had 19 points, six rebounds and three steals. Forward Manasse Itete, a sophomore, finished with a double-double (11 points, 12 rebounds) and sophomore guard Jamari Phillips finished with 22 points with five made threes.

MaxPreps’ No. 7 ranked team in California will play Clovis East (9-5) Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Clovis East 79, Gregori 67: After a back and forth first half, the Timberwolves (9-5) took the lead after Camden Thompson sank a three to beat the third quarter buzzer and give Clovis East a 58-56 lead. The Jaguars (4-9) fought but couldn’t hit shots down the stretch.

Cosumnes Oaks 61, Bullard 48: The Wolfpack led by four after the third quarter and ran away with the game in the fourth, outscoring the Knights 18-7 and capturing their third win. They play Vanden in the final game of Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m.

Vanden 44, Manteca 39: The Vikings advanced to the winners bracket with Monday’s win. The Buffaloes tried to mount a comeback that fell just short.

Bakersfield Christian 90, Weston Ranch 82: The Eagles (7-2) started fast, riding their early lead to a win over the Cougars (4-7).

Clovis West 69, Ripon 25: The Golden Eagles advanced to 15-0 with a wire-to-wire victory over Ripon in the first round. They will play Vanden on Dec. 28 at 8:30 p.m.

Pleasant Valley 76, Edison 74 (OT): Pleasant Valley needed overtime to extend its win streak to 10 games. Noah Thomas hit four threes and poured in a team-high 27 points, he also led the Vikings with five steals. Ned Joyce hit a team-high five threes en route to 20 points and Chase Mitchell had a 15-point, 11-rebound double double.

Durango (NV) 67, Turlock 46: The Trailblazers (6-3) showed why they are ranked as Nevada’s third-best team by MaxPreps. They turned around their two-game skid and rolled to victory over the Bulldogs (9-3). Turlock plays in the first game of Day 2 at 10 a.m.

Enochs 83, Gunderson 46: The Eagles led 25-8 after the first quarter en route to setting a new season-high in points on Monday evening in the Roseville High School tournament. They will be tested Tuesday against a sound Sonora team that comes into the game with a 13-1 record.

Arcata 52, Central Catholic 48: The Raiders dropped their third straight game on the opening day of the Roseville High School tournament.

Girls’ Basketball

West 37, Beyer 28: After beating Riverbank on Dec. 6, the Patriots showed their rust falling to the Wolfpack on Monday. Beyer has lost three of its last four games.

McNair 53, Ripon Christian 35: The Knights lost their fifth straight game in Monday’s non-league game. Kalysa Phanhsavang scored 27 points for the Eagles. The freshman is averaging 20.5 points and 2.6 steals a game.

Argonaut 75, Turlock 45: The Bulldogs couldn’t get back in the win column as their losing streak extends to six games against the Sac-Joaquin Section’s 16th ranked team.

Ripon 38, Oakdale 26: The Indians earned their eighth win of the season in Monday’s tournament game. They play Orestimba (10-2) at the Tracy Breakfast Lions Tournament Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Orestimba 45, Downey 38: The Knights dropped their second straight game with the seven-point loss to the Warriors. Senior Ciera Thibodeau finished with 20 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Warriors. Senior guard Reagan Marroquin added 14 points, six rebounds and seven steals.
