Prep basketball roundup: Downey opens Mark Gallo Invitational against Manteca

Despite three Knights scoring in double figures, Downey couldn’t overcome a first-half deficit to Manteca in the first game of the Mark Gallo Invitational basketball tournament, losing 50-45.

Junior Lloyd French led all Knights scorers with 15 points. Senior Fayzon Allen and junior Jahmaree Gonder added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

After trailing by seven points heading into halftime, Gonder sank two three pointers and rolled in two layups in the third quarter to help lead the Knights back into the game. They trailed 41-39 at the end of the period.

Manteca forward Ryan Inderbitzin finished with a game-high 18 points, including two layups down the stretch to seal the win for the Buffaloes.

First-round games at the tournament, hosted by Central Catholic High School, continue on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Tuesday schedule: Lathrop at Atwater (5 p.m.), Chavez at Sonora (6:30 p.m.), Turlock at Edison (8 p.m.)

Wednesday schedule: Liberty Ranch at McNair (5 p.m.), El Capitan at Lincoln (6:30 pm.), Ripon Christian at Santa Cruz (8 p.m.)

Boys’ Basketball

Gregori 67, Cosumnes Oaks 65: The Jaguars got back in the win column after five straight losses. Kyle Monk finished with 29 points and eight rebounds. Monk scored his 1,000th career point in the game. Kobe Nunes added 15 points and three assists.

Escalon 77, Davis 52: Four players scored in double figures as the Cougars earned their fifth win of the season. They never trailed after jumping ahead 18-8 after the first quarter.

Hughson 61, Central Valley 57: The Huskies earned their first win of the season against the Hawks (6-3), ending Central Valley’s three-game win streak.

Girls’ Basketball

Enochs 57, Ripon 42: The Eagles earned their third win of the season. They travel to Johansen (4-6) on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

Johansen 47, Downey 43: The Vikings earned their second home win of the season Monday night in a non-league game against the Knights. Harleigh Camp (15 points, 10 rebounds) and Alize Martinez (12 points, 11 rebounds) tallied double doubles.

Oakdale 40, Ripon Christian 27: The Mustangs (5-3) rebounded from back-to-back losses with a big non-league over the Knights who are searching for their second win of the season.
