Notebook: Local schools in volleyball section Top 25; MC players receive college offers

Several Stanislaus District volleyball teams are getting into the heart of their regular seasons.

Escalon (13-1), Ripon Christian (18-3), Ripon (11-5) and Pitman (8-5) are among the Top 25 teams in the Sac-Joaquin Section rankings, according to MaxPreps.

Here are some upcoming key matchups:

  • Sept. 16: No. 5 Escalon vs. No. 21 Ripon at Escalon High School, 6 p.m.
  • Sept. 16: No. 23 Pitman vs. Gregori at Pitman High School, 6 p.m.
  • Sept. 20: No. 9 Ripon Christian vs. Mariposa County at Ripon Christian, 6:30 p.m.

MJC volleyball player earns honors: Freshman Brionna Sims was named Northern California Player of the Week by the California Community College Volleyball Association.

She is the first winner in MJC history, the school announced..

The 5-foot-9 Pitman High graduate tallied 37 kills in three early September victories and was the Pirates’ main offensive attacker. She hit .264 that week, adding 24 digs and four aces.

Two of Sims’ standout performances came in wins against Solano and Porterville, when she tallied 18 kills and a 15-kill, 11-dig double-double, respectively.

Sims and MJC (5-2) take on Ohlone and Butte at Cosumnes River College in the CRC Classic on Sept. 15 before hosting Santa Rosa on Sept. 17 at 5:30 p.m.

Modesto Christian’s Phillips garners interest: Modesto Christian High basketball player Jamari Phillips recently picked up offers from Ole Miss, Texas Tech and USC, according to MC’s Twitter feed.

Phillips has garnered interest from California and Washington State, according to 247Sports.

The 6-foot-2 guard is ranked 17th in the ESPN Top 25 for the 2024 class.

Phillips isn’t the only MC player picking up steam in recruiting. Class of 2023 guard Bryant Davis recently received an offer from UC Davis.

Cross Country results: Stanislaus State hosted the Kim Duyst Twilight invitational at River Oaks Golf Course in Ceres on Saturday, Sept. 11.

Here are the top results:

Girls 5,000 Meters varsity team results: Ripon (42), Turlock (54), Mira Loma (70).

Girls 5,000 Meters varsity individual results: 1. Kiah Aitken, Lodi – sophomore (18 minutes, 22 seconds), 2. Isabel Perez-Zoghbi, Merced – senior (18:59), 3. Ella Waters, Summerville – senior (19:36).

Boys 5,000 Meters varsity team results: East Union (62), Downey (83), Ripon (94).

Boys 5,000 Meters varsity individual results: Adin Dibble, Sonora – senior (15:32), Broen Holman, Sonora – freshman (15:32), Cooper Freeman, East Union – senior (15:48).

The popular Frogtown Invitational is Saturday at the Calaveras Country Fairgrounds.

The small-school boys and girls varsity will go off at 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., respectively. The large-school boys and girls will start at 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.,. respectively.

The first races, including frosh-soph, start at 9 a.m.
