CIF delays start of sports season due to coronavirus
After the CIF canceled the spring sports season for prep athletes on April 3 due to the coronavirus, the question started: Will the fall sports year start on time?
Two and a half months later, the answer is no as the CIF released its sports calendar on Monday and traditional fall sports will begin in December or January.
The decision was given to each section to decide when to start the season.
The first contest for cross country, soccer (Division VII only), volleyball (boys and girls), and water polo (boys and girls) will be Dec. 28 in the Sac-Joaquin Section and football will begin on Jan. 8.
All “winter” sports (basketball, soccer, and wrestling) have been moved into the spring along with girls golf and girls tennis.
One notable change are football playoffs will be reduced by one week and from 12 to eight-team divisions.
The CIF also suspended three bylaws, one of which will allow athletes to participate in club sports while playing for their high school teams.
