High School Sports

All Stanislaus County Districts remain closed for high school athletics

While the summer period officially began in the Sac-Joaquin Section for high school athletics on Monday, Stanislaus District schools have been unable to practice due to the coronavirus pandemic and it seems likely teams won’t have any practices during June.

The Stanislaus County of Office and Education said Tuesday that practicing is still not allowed and all districts in the area will open together as one and not separately.

“No decisions will be made prior to July 1 unless explicit instructions come down from higher up. This is all subject to change,” Hughson High Athletic Director Joel Bernard said in a post on the school’s sports network Facebook page.

Whether some sports will even have a season is a question being pondered in Sacramento.

According to The Sacramento Bee, a task force with 54 education officials and 15 teacher/parent leaders who worked with the Sacramento County Public Health Office prepared a recommendation plan for school reopening.

In the early copy, which The Bee obtained, the Sacramento Office of Education recommends the following sports would not be played under the guidelines in the plan: Basketball, baseball, soccer, softball, volleyball, water polo, wrestling, and football.

Sports where social distancing is “feasible” and modifications can be made would be allowed. Those sports are cheerleading, diving, golf, swimming (every other lane), tennis, track and field, and cross country.

No decision has been made by school officials or the CIF.

“This would decimate area schools and it would kill Sacramento County high school sports,” said Carl Reed, athletic director and assistant football coach at Grant High School in an interview with Sacramento Bee reporter Joe Davidson.
