Notebook: Ripon senior wins award; CIF to meet Friday to discuss spring sports
Ripon High senior Nico Ilardi was awarded a $500 scholarship on Mar. 26 after being named one of the two Sac-Joaquin Section winners of the 2019-20 Winter CIF Spirit of Sport Award.
The award recognizes student-athletes who are active in school and community service and exhibit leadership qualities. The winners also have demonstrated the 16 principles of Pursuing Victory with Honor. The principles have been adopted by the 1,606-member high schools in the state.
Ilardi led the Ripon football team to section and state championships in 2019 and is on the basketball and golf teams. He also plays in the school’s band and has been in ASB all four years.
Breanna Marshall from Will C. Wood High School was the other winner from the section.
Abbey Brown (Middletown High School) and Lingxiang Hu (San Francisco International High School) were the statewide winners and received an award, a patch, and a $1,000 scholarship.
CIF to make decision regarding spring sports on Friday: The CIF and 10 section commissioners are meeting Friday to discuss the future of the high school spring sports season due to concerns over the coronavirus.
The two sides met on Mar. 17 and didn’t make a decision, instead planning to reconvene 2 1/2 weeks later.
“In anticipation of further guidance and directives issued by federal, state and local government agencies regarding COVID-19, the CIF has not determined the future of spring sports events at this time and intends to reconvene with the 10 Section Commissioners on April 3 to revisit this issue,” CIF Executive Director Ron Nocetti said in a press release on March 17.
