Notebook: Hughson and Ripon Christian girls basketball teams fall in semifinals

The two remaining Stanislaus District girls basketball teams both saw their quests for CIF Sac-Joaquin Section titles end on Monday.

In Div. IV, No. 12 seed Hughson (20-9) fell to No. 1 seed Argonaut (27-4), 69-58. The Huskies kept the game close in the first half and trailed 34-32 after two quarters but were outscored, 35-26, in the second half.

In Div. VI, No. 4 seed Ripon Christian (16-11) missed a game-typing 3-pointer as time expired and lost to No. 1 seed Valley Christian (23-1), 56-53. It’s the second straight year Ripon Christian lost in the semifinals.

Senior guard Sarah Brown had 17 points for the Knights.

Both teams will await their fates when the CIF State releases its brackets on Sunday.

Spring sports season begins Friday: While winter sports have championships this week, Friday begins the spring sports season for high school athletics except for lacrosse, which began on Feb. 21.

Gardner leads Dragons in rushing despite loss: Despite a loss, former Central Valley grad and Seattle Dragons running back Ja’Quan Gardner led the team with 37 rushing yards in the Dragons’ 24-12 loss to the Dallas Renegades on Feb. 22.

Gardner has 100 rushing yards in three games for the Dragons (1-2), who are at the St. Louis Battlehawks on Saturday at 5 p.m. on Fox.
