Modesto Christian’s hoop tournament starts Thursday; Ceres boxer wins in Louisiana

The annual Modesto Christian Holiday Hoop Classic boys basketball tournament begins Thursday at the Salida campus.

Six of the 16 schools participating are from the Stanislaus District.

Here is the schedule for the first day: Liberty Ranch at Vanden (10 a.m.), Manteca at Clovis East (11:30 a.m.), Brookside Christian at Bullard (1 p.m.), Turlock at Weston Ranch (2:30 p.m.), Sonora at Clovis West (4 p.m.), Beyer at Campolindo (5:30 p.m.), Gregori at Modesto Christian (7 p.m.), Ripon at James Logan (8:30 p.m.).

Tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for students with I.D. cards, $5 for seniors (62 years and older), and free for children under five. Tournament passes are $44 and give access to every game.

Play continues through Saturday, then a day off Sunday and the final day of competition on Monday, including the 7:30 p.m. championship game.

Local boxer wins at national championships: Ceres native and La Rosa Elementary School third-grader Damon Flores won the Pee Wee division title at the USA Boxing Youth National Championships in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on Dec. 12.

Flores defeated Cruz Cunningham from Monroeville, Pennsylvania, by a split decision in the final.

Damon won a title at the USA Boxing National Junior Olympic Championships in late June in Wisconsin.

Former Modesto Christian defensive lineman signs with Utah: Xavier Carlton, who was an All-District honoree as a junior at Modesto Christian before transferring to Juan Diego Catholic in Utah, signed with the Utah Utes on Dec. 19.
