Notebook: CC boys hoops hosting tournament beginning Tuesday

The second annual Mark Gallo Boys Basketball Invitational begins Tuesday at Central Catholic.

Sixteen teams, including five local schools, are participating in the tournament.

Gregori, which beat Lincoln, 64-55, in the Modesto City Classic Championship on Dec. 7, is one of the team’s entered.

The schedule for the first two days is:

Tuesday: Sonora at Stagg (3:30 p.m.), Newark Memorial at Manteca (5 p.m.), Vanden at Christian Brothers (6:30 p.m.), Central Catholic at Patterson (8 p.m.)

Wednesday: Burbank at Gregori (3:30 p.m.), Immanuel at Liberty Ranch (5 p.m.), Sacramento at Santa Cruz (6:30 p.m.), Grant at Modesto (8 p.m.)

Grant won the tournament last year.

Meanwhile, the Modesto Christian boys basketball team plays San Joaquin Memorial in the first round of the Clovis West Nike Invitational on Tuesday. The Crusaders won the tournament last year.

Modesto Christian was ranked No. 9 in CalHiSports.com’s preseason rankings while Grant was No. 38.

The Crusaders’ girls basketball team beat Manteca, 59-54, in the Crusader Classic Championship on Dec. 7.

State Championship sites announced: Both Escalon and Ripon officially announced on social media Sunday that they will host their CIF State championship football games on campus on Saturday.

Ripon (13-1) hosts Highland from Palmdale (12-3) in the Division-4AA championship and Escalon (13-1) hosts La Jolla (10-4) in the Division 4-A title game.

Both games are at 6 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for high school students (with a valid ASB card), seniors (65 years old and older) and children.

According to the Escalon Times, the town’s Christmas on Main event has been moved from Saturday to Sunday due to the championship.

  • The 2019 James Riddle Classic boys wrestling tournament is Saturday at Oakdale High School. The tournament begins at 9 a.m.
  • MLB.com released its MLB Draft Top 100 Prospects list last week and Turlock senior catcher Tyler Soderstrom was No. 17. The draft is in June.
  • If you were unable to attend Ripon’s NorCal victory over Sutter on Dec. 6 and watched the NFHS broadcast instead, you might have heard a familiar voice. Central Catholic coach Roger Canepa was the color commentator for the event.
