Beyer High’s Coleman captures junior division national title in modern pentathlon

Beyer High School senior-to-be Rachel Coleman won the Modern Pentathlon Junior Division U.S. National Championship in a competition held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center last weekend.

Coleman was strong across the board, and her consistency paid off as she finished fourth in fencing, third in swimming, second in horse riding and third in the combined running and shooting event.

After battling a series of injuries leading up to the weekend, Coleman managed to put those concerns behind her and focus on a consistent and measured performance that led to victory.

“I am happy with my performance today,” Coleman said after finishing the run. “It was a great competition, and the best part is I gained significant experience at the junior level and feel there is a lot of room for improvement.

“I am looking forward to a great summer of competitions.”

Coleman has been a member of the United States World Cup team and will represent the United States in the Junior World Championships in Mexico City in August.

Next up for her will be the U.S. Youth A National Championship later this month. A win will earn Coleman an additional spot on the United States team competing at the Youth A World Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in September.

Last month, Coleman was at the U.S. Olympic Training Center for the Pan Am Cup and won the Junior category with a personal best in the 200-meter swim and a solid performance in the fencing event.

In March, the 17-year-old won the first Davis Regional, organized by the director of the Davis Fencing Academy. The event had the largest youth participation in U.S. pentathlon history with 57 athletes. Earlier in the month, Coleman placed second in the U.S. Olympic Training Center Youth Regional with solid performances in the swim and a clear round in equestrian.
