Local track and field athletes are one step away from the CIF State Meet held next weekend at Buchanan High School in Clovis.
Before they can start to think about that meet, they will have to qualify at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Meet on Friday and Saturday at Davis Sr. High School in Davis.
Preliminary events for every track event except for the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races are on Friday with several field events also on the day.
The top three finishers in each event automatically qualify for the State Meet as well as any athlete that makes the at-large state qualifying mark. That mark is the average of the ninth-place finisher in the event from the state meet in the last three years.
The meet starts at 2 p.m. for field events and 4 p.m. for running events on Friday while the section moved up the start time on Saturday due to heavy rain in the forecast and will start a 1 p.m. for field and 1:50 for running.
