It was only fitting Turlock sophomore Dominic Rodriguez caught the final out of Wednesday’s Central California Athletic League game against Gregori.
It was his day as the 6-foot-1 pitcher threw five shutout innings and went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs as the Bulldogs beat the Jaguars, 5-0.
“He is a competitor and was throwing three pitches (fastball, changeup, and curveball) for strikes,” Bulldogs coach Sean Gilbert said. “He was able to get ahead of hitters (in the count).”
Rodriguez retired the last seven batters
Against Gregori (7-12-1, 5-6) senior pitcher Mateo Cisneros, Rodriguez had two doubles, one in the top of the second inning and the other in the third. Turlock scored one in the second and three in the third.
“He had a good approach at the plate and stayed in the middle and didn’t think about pulling the ball,” Gilbert said.
With the win, the Bulldogs (15-5, 10-1) have won three in a row after falling to rival Pitman on April 10.
Junior Tyler Soderstrom was 2-for-2 with two runs scored for Turlock.
Gregori junior Jeff Hoffman was 3-for-3 and increased his hitting-streak to seven games. Entering the game, his batting average was .431.
The two battle in the series finale Thursday at 3:45 p.m. at Turlock.
Los Banos 13, Ceres 0: Senior pitcher Max Ramirez had 10 strikeouts for the Tigers (16-1, 10-0) in their win over the Bulldogs (9-11, 7-3).
Beyer 4, Davis 1: Junior pitcher Justin George went five innings while allowing one run and striking out seven for the Patriots (11-8, 7-3) in the win.
Weston Ranch 6, Oakdale 3: Junior Austin Meeks had all three RBIs for the Mustangs (10-6, 4-3) in their loss.
