Local Digest: Cal State Stanislaus golf season ends at NCAA D-II regionals
Unable to repeat the magic from its conference championship performance in Stockton, the Cal State Stanislaus men’s golf team wrapped up three days of play at the NCAA Division II Regionals in Vallejo on Wednesday.
The Warriors placed 15th out of 20 teams in the West/South Central Regional with a 67-over 931 total.
Anthony Manguray, a 2014 All-American honorable mention, was CSUS’ top performer at 9 over par, good for 14th place.
The Warriors won the CCAA championship two weeks ago at Stockton’s Brookside Country Club.
Cal State Monterey Bay won the tournament and the West Region championship and has secured a return trip to the NCAA Championships, along with Sonoma State, Chico State, Simon Fraser and West Texas A&M, the lone representative from the South Central Region.
Cal State Monterey Bay cruised to the title with a score of 23-over par, beating Sonoma State by 19 strokes. Colorado-Colorado Spring’s Patrick Skakel and Cal State Monterey Bay’s Ray Richards tied for first. Both Skakel and Richards shot a 217, 1-over total.
Manguray was just eight strokes behind the leader at 9-over par 225. Michael Mencaccy tied for 22nd with a 227 and freshman Jahaan Nargussi shot a 239. Tyler Leeworthy (247) and Connor Day (248) rounded out the Stanislaus scores.
Baseball
Turlock 4, Buhach Colony 1 in Atwater – The Bulldogs closed out their Central California Conference campaign and finished one game ahead of Merced for the league’s No. 2 playoff seed.
Cody Cornell and Blaine Weber combined on a six-hitter, while Alex Pallios and Brandon Booz were the hitting stars. Pallios was 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, while Booz collected three hits in four trips to the plate.
The Bulldogs, 17-9 overall and 11-4 in the CCC, will play Wednesday in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs. The Thunder finishes the season 12-15 overall and 4-11 in league.
Softball
Gregori 13, Downey 0 at Downey – The Jaguars closed out the regular season with a lopsided win over the Knights. Cassie Apple limited Downey to just a pair of hits in the five-inning, mercy-rule victory.
Morgan Modesto was 3 for 3 a double and two RBIs, while Nikki Alexander, Jasmine Temple, Nicole Stewart and Samantha Shaffer collected two hits apiece. One of Temple’s two hits was a home run. Temple and Shaffer drove in three runs apiece.
Swimming
Gauchos sweep swimming titles – The El Capitan boys and girls swim teams finished off their perfect run to Western Athletic Conference championships by winning the conference meet.
The Gauchos girls were led by Marion Carpenter, who took home titles in the 200-yard individual medley (2:22.85) and the 100 backstroke (1:05.50). Also winning individual titles for El Capitan girls were Metzli Enriquez in the 500 freestyle (6:00.24) and Madison Nolan 100 breaststroke (1:14.18).
The El Capitan boys were led by double-winner Jacob Mumford , who won the 500 freestyle (5:30.48) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.23). Evan Spiva also won the 200 IM (2:20.29).
