The inaugural CIF State Swimming and Diving Championships promise to be special – and Gregori High School’s Christian Britton wants to be a part of the action.

Britton, a junior, performed at an elite level during Saturday’s Modesto Metro Conference Championships at Johansen High School. He won twice, posting a meet-record 4 minutes, 40.3 seconds in the 500-yard freestyle. That bettered Greg Stoll’s 4:44.37 in 1982. Britton also won the 200 free (1:45.62) and contributed to the Jaguars’ victorious 200 medley team.

All swimmers now point toward the Sac-Joaquin Section Championships, which finish on May 16 at Tokay. Only the best will qualify for the historic state meet May 22-23 at the Clovis West Aquatic Complex.

Freshman Andrew Britton, Christian’s younger brother, also starred at the MMC meet. He won the 200 individual medley (2:05.70) and 100 breaststroke (1:01.01).

Downey parlayed four individual victories and two relay wins into its second league title in three years by scoring 438 points, better than runner-up Modesto with 345. The Knights were anchored by Severin Elste, who captured the 50 free (22.13) and 100 free (49.72) and swam legs on both winning relays.

Also starring for the Knights were Kyle White, who won the 100 butterfly (53.0), and 100 backstroke champion Michael Romano (58.37). White also assisted in both victorious relays, and Romano contributed in the school-record 400 free relay (3:19.05). Trevor Dixon and Sam Gibson also were members of the relay teams.

Enochs picked up its first girls league title, thanks in part to sweeping the 200 medley relay, the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay. Mikayla Walker, the Eagles’ fifth-year coach, was tossed into the pool by her happy team. Enochs totaled 478 points, followed by second-place Modesto with 378.

Enochs sophomore Lexi Mauldin led the way with wins in the 200 free (2:05.69) and 100 back (1:03.19) and two relays. Teammate Brittneigh Redfern won the 100 breaststroke (1:18.90) plus a relay. Chipping in on the Eagles’ success in the relays were Alicia Munoz, Katrina Guevera, Averi Peterson, Maddie Dean and Kamila Lopez.

Beyer took third place but boasted wins by Karmen Hulin in the 50 free (26.45) and 100 butterfly (1:04.71), Bailey Hamilton in the 200 IM (2:28.63) and 100 free (58.43), and Sarah Stoll in the 500 free (5:56.71).

Men’s track and field

Randoph wins again – Sophomore Gary Randolph annexed his second California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships win with a put 55 feet, 111/4 inches in the shot at San Francisco State’s Cox Stadium. Randolph won the hammer throw on Thursday. He nearly tripled in the meet, but Cal Poly Pomona’s Hector Alarcon overtook Randolph with a 160-9 on his final attempt in the discus.

The Warriors, who placed fourth and were far behind victorious Chico State, went 1-2-3 in the 800 with Abraham Alvarado (1:51.21), Ian Brooks and Ramon Vargas.

Women’s track and field

Relay victory – The Warriors’ only win at the CCAA Championships was a big one, as Kyra Vaughn, Mercy Akanji, Misha Strong and Chavariana Ryan captured the 4x400-meter relay (3:45.52). Ryan was fourth in the 400. The Warriors placed fourth with 100 points and trailed first-place Chico State with 2131/2.

Baseball

Warriors drop pair – Cal State Stanislaus couldn’t hold on to a 6-1 lead in the first game and dropped a CCAA doubleheader 14-7 and 6-4 to Cal State East Bay on the Warriors’ Senior Day. Stanislaus (21-27, 16-22 CCAA) was victimized by a five-run fourth-inning rally by the Pioneers (20-26, 17-22) in the nightcap.

Marcus Mastrobuoni collected his 29th and 30th RBIs of the season.

Stevie Robinson, Michael Chavarria, Patrick Mulry, Scott Stetson and Nick Ippolito had two hits apiece for the Warriors in the opener.

Stanislaus will end the season with a single game today at noon at East Bay.
