She's scored the most points in a game in District history. Where will she play next?
Grace Davis High point guard Lea Anderson made it official on Monday during a lunchtime ceremony on campus.
Surrounded by family and athletic director and coach Tim Garcia, Anderson signed her national letter of intent, solidifying her commitment to Cal State University, Dominguez Hills. She wore the Toros' burgundy and gold, and a smile that stretched from ear to ear.
She joins a program that hovers around .500. Dominguez Hills is 10-12 overall and 8-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Toros coach John Bonner appreciates Anderson's attention to detail and pedigree. She is a member of the Oakland Soldiers AAU program and played one season at St. Mary's High in Stockton. Since then, she's been a two-time All-District player for the Spartans.
"Lea is a blue-collar point guard that can push the ball, shoot it consistently and understands how to set up her teammates," Bonner said on the school website. "She comes from a well-coached high school program at Davis, and has played against some of the best as a member of the Oakland Soldiers AAU program.
"She is committed to doing the little things on the floor, which is going to have a great impact for our program."
Anderson's latest milestone falls in line with her sensational senior season.
The 5-foot-2 guard captured the state's attention earlier in the season when she had back-to-back 50-point games, including a Stanislaus District record 59 in a win over Sierra. Anderson made 23 free throws, which placed her in the top-15 in state history and No. 2 all-time in the Stanislaus District. Only Oakdale's Alicia Reid made more free throws, 24 in a playoff loss in 2004.
One night later, Anderson dropped 56 points on another Valley Oak League for, Central Catholic, connecting on nine 3-pointers.
In two games, she scored 115 of her team's 136 points.
"Special talent who has grown into a true leader on and off the court," Garcia said. "She has left her mark as one of the best female basketball players to ever wear the green and gold."
Entering the week, the Spartans were 9-12 and 3-5 in Modesto Metro Conference play, based on results reported to MaxPreps. Anderson is averaging 32.8 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while carrying a 3.27 grade-point average.
