Gregori routs Modesto, moves into tie for first in the MMC with Beyer

Jeff Gray pitched six strong innings for Gregori High School, and the Jaguars gave him plenty of support as they defeated Modesto 14-1 to move into a first-place tie with Beyer in the Modesto Metro Conference.

Gray allowed one run and scattered four hits as he improved to 8-0 on the season. Justin Cox pitched the seventh. Offensively, John Hernandez, Tyler Janitz and Cox had two hits apiece.

Beyer had the league bye this week, losing to Western Athletic Conference leader Ceres 5-4 on Monday and beating Escalon 16-6 on Friday in nonleague matchups.

The Jaguars and Patriots split their season series, with Beyer winning 6-2 on March 25 and Gregori taking a 12-4 decision two days later.

Enochs 5, Downey 2 at Downey – C.J. Hackett pitched six scoreless innings and propelled the Eagles to an MMC win over the Knights.

Hackett retired the first six hitters before allowing the first two to reach in the third. After Downey sacrificed the runners to second and third, Hackett induced two groundouts to escape the threat.

The Eagles got on the board in the second when Eli Martinez delivered a two-run single. Enochs added three in the fifth to break it open.

Downey scored twice in the seventh, and Payton Butterfield relieved Hackett to get the final out.

Central Catholic 6, Manteca 4 at Manteca – The Raiders overcame a 4-0 deficit, scoring four runs in the fourth to tie the score and two in the sixth to take the lead for good in a Valley Oak League matchup.

Brad Nightengale was the winning pitcher and Travis Waara the leading hitter for CC, going 2 for 4 and scoring two runs. John Weatherred and Ryan Dami each drove in two runs for the Raiders. Jake Menasco was 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Buffaloes.

Turlock 12, Golden Valley 1 at Merced – The Bulldogs pounded 13 hits and completed a series sweep of the Cougars. Turlock won the opener of the three-game set 26-2 on Tuesday, then got a no-hitter from Marcus Lopez in a 2-0 win Thursday.

Brandon Booz, who homered Thursday in Lopez’s no-hitter, was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs. Anthony Moreno was 2 for 2 with an RBI. The Bulldogs take on Merced next week before a showdown with crosstown rival Pitman on April 28, 30 and May 1 in a series that could decide the Central California Conference pennant.

Sierra 10, Kimball 0 at Sierra – Jake Gallagher pitched a five-inning, mercy-rule no-hitter as the Timberwolves remained in a tie for first atop the Valley Oak League. Gallagher struck out five and walked one.

Nick Lucchetti was 2 for 2 with two doubles, Anthony Arredondo was 2 for 2 with a double, and Tanner Peterson was 2 for 3.

UC San Diego 11, Cal State Stanislaus 0 in Turlock – Justin Donatella, one of the top pitchers in the West Region, lowered his ERA to 0.55 as he and the Tritons (27-14, 22-10 California Collegiate Athletic Association) cooled off the Warriors (18-21, 13-16). Donatella (8-1) allowed two hits in eight innings.

Stanislaus will try to rebound in today’s doubleheader, starting at 2 p.m.

Santa Rosa 4, Modesto 0 in Santa Rosa – The Pirates (11-20-1, 5-13 Big 8 Conference) managed only two runs in three games this week as the Bear Cubs (23-10, 12-6) completed a sweep. Starter Brent Montgomery kept Modesto close until Santa Rosa pulled away with three runs in the eighth. MJC was outhit 10-4.
