Turlock’s Lopez hurls no-hitter against Merced’s Golden Valley

Senior right-hander Marcus Lopez threw a no-hitter and vaulted the Turlock High Bulldogs into sole possession of first place in the Central California Conference with a 2-0 win at home over Golden Valley.

“It’s a good thing, too,” said Turlock coach Mark de la Motte. “We almost got no-hit ourselves.”

The 5-foot-10 Lopez (4-1) struck out three and walked three as the Bulldogs (6-0, 12-5) took advantage of Pitman’s 2-0 loss to Atwater to jump into first place alone.

“I didn’t have my best stuff but I battled through,” Lopez said. “I had a lot of 3-0 counts but I got the job done.”

Turlock got all the runs it needed in the fifth on a solo homer by Brandon Booz, a triple by Cody Cornell and a run-scoring ground-out by Alex Pallios.

The Bulldogs and Pitman will meet in a three-game CCC showdown on April 28 and 30 and May 1.
