Local digest: Beyer advances to Easter tourney title game despite loss

Beyer High School, the defending champ of the Dick Windemuth Easter Baseball Tournament, committed five errors, and Patterson took advantage for an 8-4 victory on Thursday at Modesto High School despite being outhit 12-4.

The Patriots still advanced to Friday’s 4 p.m. championship game against Ripon, a 5-2 winner over Modesto.

With the scored tied 1-1, the Tigers scored three runs in the fifth inning thanks to a pair of errors and two passed balls. Single tallies by Beyer in the fifth and sixth made it 4-3, but Patterson erupted for four in the seventh.

With the bases loaded and one out, Ernesto Huizar delivered a line drive to left that plated one, and Thomas Turner followed with a single to center that pushed across two more. Huizar later scored on a passed ball to make it 8-3.

Michael Scott was 3 for 3 for the Pats, while Jack Large and Ryan Frakes had two hits each.

Santiago Cantu went the distance to earn the win for the Tigers despite yielding 12 hits and three walks.

Patterson will take on Modesto on Friday at 2 p.m. in the third-place game. Downey and Bradshaw Christian will meet at 11:30 a.m. for fifth place, and Johansen will play Davis at 9 a.m. for seventh.

Downey 10, Davis 9 at Modesto High – Trailing by four runs entering the bottom of the seventh, the Spartans loaded the bases with no outs and scored three runs only to have their rally fall short against the Modesto Metro Conference rival Knights.

Miguel Valdez delivered a two-run single to make it 10-8 in the seventh. But pitcher Jimmy Calvillo picked off a Davis runner at first for the first out and, after Raul Sanchez stole home, struck out the final two batters to lock down the win.

Cameron Sexton and Sanchez each were 2 for 3 for the Spartans, while Brett Neves, Josh Silva and Calvillo had two hits for Downey, which got three RBIs from Josh Lowe.

Bradshaw Christian 9, Johansen 3 at Modesto High – The Vikings fell behind 6-0 before getting on the board with a three-run fifth. Joaquin Ramirez was 2 for 3 with a two-run single for Johansen.

Enochs 11, Dublin 5 at San Luis Obispo – Competing at the San Luis Obispo Spring Tournament, the Eagles scored five in the third, gave back four of those in the bottom of the frame, then produced at least one run in each of the remaining four innings to get the win.

Tyler Butterfield was 2 for 4 with a homer, double and four RBIs, while Austin Pires, Jordan Davidson and Aaron Davis each collected two hits apiece.

JC Baseball

Sierra 5, Modesto 4 (10) at Rocklin – The Wolverines (13-15, 7-7 Big 8 Conference) tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the ninth, then won the game on a bases-loaded walk in the first extra frame. Matt Clark had three hits and scored twice for the Pirates (10-17-1, 4-10). Eddie Machado allowed two unearned runs through eight innings but was pulled after hitting the first two batters he faced in the ninth. Sierra’s Austin Blatnick tied the score with a one-out single off Noel Sanchez, and the loss went to Xavier Macias after he walked three batters and allowed a single in the 10th. The Pirates and Wolverines will complete their three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m. at MJC.

JC Tennis

American River 9, Modesto 0 at Sacramento – The Beavers, seeded No. 2 in Northern California, opened regional team play with a whitewash of the Pirates. In singles, only Gurman Bains extended his match to three sets among MJC players, although Jose Gonzalez gave ARC’s Seppi Capaul – NorCal’s No. 1 player – a strong match in first singles before falling 6-3, 7-5. The Pirates, ranked No. 7 in the region, will regroup for the state tournament April 23-26 in Ojai.
