DeLong boys water polo tournament gets underway on Friday

The 25th annual DeLong Boys Water Polo Tournament will be held Friday at Saturday throughout the Stanislaus District.

Forty-eight teams from throughout Northern California and Oregon will compete at six different pools – Enochs, Johansen, Downey, Beyer (Saturday), Pitman and Ripon – throughout the Stanislaus District.

Locally, all 14 teams from the Modesto Metro Conference – Beyer, Davis, Downey, Enochs, Gregori, Johansen and Modesto – and the Central California Conference – Turlock, Pitman, Atwater, Buhach Colony, Merced, Golden Valley and El Capitan – are set to compete, as is Oakdale, Sonora and Ripon.

Three-time reigning champion Granite Bay is back to defend its crown.

Action gets underway both days at 7:30 a.m., while Friday’s late games begin at 4:40 p.m. On Saturday late games get started at Johansen, Downey and Ripon go off at 1:20 p.m., while late games at Pitman, Enochs and Beyer start at 4:40.

The championship game will be played at Johansen’s B. Brent Bohlender Aquatics Facility at 1:20 p.m.

No Stanislaus District team has won the DeLong tourney since 2002, when the host Vikings took the title.
