Patriots blanks MMC foe Downey at Windemuth tournament

Beyer High took another step toward defending its title at the Dick Windemuth Easter Tournament with a 12-0 victory over Modesto Metro Conference foe Downey on Wednesday at the Modesto High diamond.

The Patriots’ Kevin Duffy pitched 41/3 innings in which he allowed just one hit while striking out eight and overcoming six walks. Reliever Matt Williams entered with one out in the fifth and retired all five batters he faced.

Offensively, Caleb Saalfeld was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two driven in, while Chris Alonzo and Jordan Walls collected two hits apiece.

Downey faces Davis today at 9 a.m., while Beyer takes on Patterson at 11:30 a.m.

Patterson 9, Davis 0, at Modesto High – The Tigers’ Kevin Phelps was dominant on the mound, strikeout and 10 and allowing just four hits in six innings of work.

The 1-2-3 spots in Patterson’s batting order – Alec Keith-Espos, Antonio Bustos and Santiago Cantu, respectively – reached base nine times in 12 plate appearances, with seven runs scored two driven in.

Keith-Espos, Bustos and Garrett Fowler collected two hits apiece.

Bradshaw Christian 9, Modesto 1, at Modesto High – Ricardo Martinez collected two of the Panthers’ four hits. The Pride’s Grant Dragmire was impressive in going the distance, fanning nine and scattering four hits.

Ripon 7, Johansen 1, at Modesto High – The Indians rapped out 10 hits, with Nick Price, Zach Horwood, Trent Murphy and Luke Robison getting two apiece, while four pitchers combined to limit the Vikings to a pair of hits.

Brandon Scott got the win for Ripon, striking out three and allowing one hit in four innings.

Johansen takes on reigning Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI champ Bradshaw Christian (Sacramento) today at 2 p.m., while the Indians face host Modesto at 4:30.

Art McRae Tournament

Ceres 7, Central Catholic, at Ceres High – The Bulldogs broke open a close game with four runs in the fourth inning.

Brett Conway had a three-run double for Ceres, while teammates Ismael Ontiveros, Brad Bussard, Brent Bussard and Caleb McDade had two hits apiece. For the Raiders, Travis Warra was 2-for-4 with a double, while Austin Escobar had a three-run homer in the seventh.

Today at Ceres High at the McRae tournament, Central Catholic takes on Orestimba at 8:45 a.m., while Ceres plays Yerington (Nev.) at 11:15. Across town at Central Valley, Riverbank and CVHS meet at 8:45 and Kimball takes on Brookside Christian at 11:15. The championship game will be held at Ceres High at 4:15 p.m.

JC BASEBALL

Sierra 5, Modesto JC 1, at Modesto – Pirates hurler Tyler Arnsberg pitched seven strong innings, giving up three earned runs while scattering five hits, but he was outdueled by Sierra’s Tanner McVey, who struck out five in going the distance.

The Wolverines led 1-0 through six and extended that lead to 3-0 on a run-scoring double and an error.

Modesto JC cut into the lead in the bottom of the frame when Carlo Del Real’s sacrifice fly plated William Reeder. But Sierra regrouped and scored two more in the eighth to take control.

Reeder and Jacob Cooper were each 2-for-4 for the Pirates.

The teams will square off again today in Rocklin at 2:30 p.m.
