Enochs High’s Perez runs scoreless streak to 33 innings
Enochs High School softball player Elisa Perez wears No. 2 in honor of her favorite player – former New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter.
Perez, like many fans of the Bronx Bombers, is a little nervous as to what is in store without The Captain.
“I’m very concerned not having Jeter,” Perez said. “It’s going to be different this year.”
Really, that’s about all Perez has to worry about these days.
The senior pitched her fifth consecutive shutout Tuesday, running her streak of innings without allowing a run to 33 in the Eagles’ 8-0 victory over Modesto. Enochs (9-3) remains perfect in Modesto Metro Conference play at 5-0, while the Panthers (1-11) drop to 0-4 in league.
“Honestly, I don’t think about the streak,” said Perez, who will attend Boise State to study nursing next fall and play softball as a recruited walk-on. “But I like to hear about it. It feels good.”
Perez struck out 12, walked none and allowed just three hits.
“She did a really good job,” Modesto coach Megan Ramsey said. “She had good movement, good placement and definitely had our number today.”
The Eagles scored three runs in the first inning. For good measure, they added another run in the fifth and four in the sixth.
Anlyana Munson, Perez’s batterymate, was 4 for 4 with three RBIs, and Alexis Guerra was 2 for 4, scored two runs and stole a base.
Up next for the Eagles on Thursday is a showdown with reigning MMC champion Gregori, which is 11/2 games behind them in the standings.
The Jaguars (3-1) blasted 22 hits en route to a 19-0 win over Johansen (3-2), which entered the day a half-game ahead of Gregori in the standings.
Maddie Marsh pitched a five-inning, mercy-rule no-hitter against the Vikings.
Nikki Alexander was 4 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs for Gregori, and Melanie Menor, Jasmine Temple and Ashley McBay were each 3 for 4. Nicole Stewart was 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs. Mehana Johns (three RBIs) and Samantha Shaffer had two hits apiece.
“My goal coming into this season was to win MMC,” said Perez, who can help her team take a big step in that direction Thursday. “Especially since we didn’t win it last year.”
With the teams tied for first place late last season, Gregori beat Enochs 3-2 in nine innings on a bases-loaded single by Johns, then a freshman.
