Daniel Peña birdied the first hole in a sudden death playoff to defeat Chris Ebster for the 2017 Modesto City Golf Championship on Sunday at Dryden Park.

A 2016 graduate of Johansen High School who just completed his freshman campaign at the University of the Pacific, Peña fired a first-round 69 at Creekside and was two shots back of Day 1 leader Jay Zwahlen, who carded a 67.

Ebster, who graduated from Gregori High School last month and will attend UNLV in the fall, was seven shots off the first-round lead with his 74.

On Sunday, Ebster fired a 69 and Pena carded a 74, leaving the Modesto products one shot ahead of third-place finisher Jeff Thomas.

Zwahlen, after the hot start, shot an 85 on Sunday and finished in 15th place.

In the Senior Championship flight, David Halvorson carded matching 75s over the weekend and finished two shots better than Dave Flores, who, after an opening-round 82, was 12 shots better on Sunday and stormed back into contention.

Richard Christeson won the men’s First Flight with a two-day total of 148 (76-72), while Jim Wilson was the Second Flight winner with a 163 (81-82).

Jim McClure’s 169 (90-79) was good enough to take the Third Flight medal by two strokes, while Gary Dowd (106-98) won the Fourth Flight with a 204.

Roberts Woods took the Senior Handicap Flight with a net 135 (70-65), while Bergen Benedict was the Women’s Flight champion with a net 153 (77-76).
