Local digest: MJC falls in baseball opener
The Modesto Junior College baseball season opener went well – until one swing of the bat from Los Medanos’ Ryan Welsh.
His three-run double in the bottom of the seventh gave the Mustangs their first lead en route to a 6-3 win Thursday afternoon. Modesto, riding a big day by third baseman Robby Steves (3-for-4, two RBIs), scored in the first inning and led 3-1 before the home team rallied.
Modesto starter Eddie Machado went six-plus innings before an error complicated matters in the seventh. Spencer Thomas was 3-for-4 and Stefan Aguilar 2-for-4 for the Pirates, who out-hit Los Medanos 10-4.
Modesto will play its home opener against Los Medanos on Saturday at 1 p.m.
