Monterey blows past cold-shooting Stanislaus men

SEASIDE Ice-cold shooting in the first half sent the conference-leading Cal State Stanislaus men’s basketball team to a shocking 80-60 loss to Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday night.

The Warriors took a 5-0 lead on Chris Read’s 3-pointer with 18 minutes, 28 seconds left. However, Stanislaus scored just two points over the next 11:14 until Rob Walters hit a jumper, leaving the Warriors down 23-9.

The loss leaves the Warriors (8-3, 11-5) in a three-way tie with Chico State and UC San Diego atop the Califronia Collegiate Athletic Association standings.

Stanislaus plays at Cal State East Bay in Hayward tonight hat 7:30.

The Warriors, who shot just 30 percent from the field in the first half, trailed by 13 at the half but cut into the lead when Rob Walters scored on a layup for the first points of the second half.

However, the 11-point deficit would be as close as the Warriors got against Monterey (5-6, 9-8). The Otters stretched the lead to as much as 29 points with 8:28 left in the game.

Christian Bayne had 12 points and Read and Walters each had 10 for Stanislaus. Evan Zeller had 15 points to lead the Otters, who came in averaging a CCAA second-best 71 points a game.
