College Roundup: Modesto JC’s Hatfield bound for Dominguez Hills

Modesto Junior College forward Michael Hatfield will continue his basketball career at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The 6-foot-8 Hatfield, a graduate of Manteca High School, committed this week to Dominguez Hills, an NCAA Division II affiliate of the California Collegiate Athletic Association. He will be on scholarship with the Toros, MJC assistant coach Jordan Jones confirmed.

Hatfield averaged 11.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game in his only season with the Pirates. He spent his freshman year as a “grayshirt” at MJC, then blossomed during the 2015-16 season. Hatfield also showed versatility by hitting 43.5 percent of his three-point shots.

Swimming

Two Pirates going to state – MJC sophomores Kamarin Waite and Miranda Knobloch have qualified for the State Championships next Thursday through Saturday at East Los Angeles College.

Waite advances in the 50 and 100 freestyle and the 400 individual medlay, while Knobloch competes in the 500 and 1,650 free.

Waite broke a 3-year-old school record in the 400 IM at last weeek’s Big 8 Championships at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill. She was timed in 5:00.61.

Baseball

Season-ending loss for MJC – The Pirates ended their season by giving up a run in the ninth inning to lose to American River 4-3 in Big 8 Conference action at the MJC ballpark.

Modesto (11-25, 5-16 Big 8) scored all three runs in the eighth inning to tie. A run-scoring double by Spencer Thomas and a two-RBI single by Mason Washington drew the Pirates even, though they missed chances to take the lead. Tyler Swank’s two-out single drove in the eventual winner for the Beavers (15-21, 9-12).

MJC starter Jacob Corn allowed two runs (one earned) and struck out three in 6 1/3 innings. Thomas accounted for three of MJC’s seven hits.

Warriors split Sonoma doubleheader – Cal State Stanislaus pitcher Ryan Paramo gave the Warriors a lift during their 7-1 win in the nightcap of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader at home against Sonoma State. Paramo retired 12 straight Seawolves at one point as Stanislaus (17-25, 15-16) remained in contention for a CCAA tournament berth. Aldo Koutsoyanopulos cleared the bases with a three-run double during the Warriors’ four-run third.

In the opener, Stanislaus came up short 6-2 despite two solo home runs by Kyle Nixon.

Golf

Pirates second in Big 8 – Modesto, led by John Morshead’s 75 and Nick Sharp’s 76, placed second, three strokes behind Reedley, in the Big 8’s 12th tournament at Ripon’s Spring Creek Country Club. The Pirates, sitting in second place overall, are ranked fifth in Northern California and will advance to the postseason.

Softball

Warriors earn all-league honors – Stanislaus shortstop Alexus Martinez and outfielder Cassidy Duke were named to the All-CCAA second team, while third baseman Ruby Quiralte was an honorable mention choice. The trio led the Warriors on offense. All three batted .349 or better.
