Modesto JC hammer throwers dominate at Big 8 meet
The Modesto Junior College Pirates, hosts for the Big 8 Conference Track and Field Championships this week, have impressed their guests in the hammer throw.
Sophomore Daniel Roberts, a three-time state champion as a freshman, led a 1-2-3-4 MJC sweep in the hammer with a throw of 198 feet, 11 inches, on Monday. Erick Loomis was second with a more than respectable 193-3.
Deaven Booker placed second in the javelin and high jump for the MJC men, who sit in second place in the team standings.
MJC sophomore Breanna Lowther captured the women’s hammer title (139 -1/2 ). The Pirate women lead American River by a point going into the meet’s final day Thursday. Field events begin at 1:30 p.m. and track events at 3 at MJC Stadium.
Baseball
MJC season finale Thursday – The Pirates (11-24, 5-15 Big 8) will finish their season against American River on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the MJC ballpark. The Pirates were beaten at American River 11-5 on Tuesday, though Austin Garcia went 2 for 4 and scored twice.
Softball
Pirates wrap up season – MJC finished its season at home with a 13-2 loss to American River in six innings. Haylie Prater and Megan McCormick drove in runs for the Pirates (4-33, 0-21).
Golf
Warriors’ Nargussi honored – Cal State Stanislaus sophomore Jahaan Nargussi earned an honorable-mention honor by California Collegiate Athletic Association coaches. Nargussi, the 2015 CCAA Freshman of the Year, won the NDNU Argonaut Invitational last month at Poppy Ridge and had four top-20 finishes. His stroke average was 74.1.
Nargussi and teammate Jordan Koelewyn have qualified for the NCAA West Regional from May 2-4 in Las Cruces, N.M.
