College Roundup: Stanislaus golfers beaten in CCAA semifinals
Cal State Stanislaus’ bid for its third straight California Collegiate Athletic Association golf championship ended Tuesday.
In a rematch of the 2015 CCAA finals, Cal State East Bay avenged last year’s 3-2 loss by defeating the Warriors 4-1 in the semifinals at Silverado.
The Pioneers advanced to Wednesday’s title match and defeated Sonoma State 3-2 for the program’s first CCAA championship. Sonoma State advanced to the finals by eliminating Chico State 3-2 at Silverado, the site of the PGA Tour’s Safeway Open in October.
Stanislaus, which advanced by placing second behind Chico in the 36-hole medal play round Monday, struggled against East Bay. Jahaan Nargussi shot even par and earned the team’s only point by downing Adam Stone by five strokes. Stone won the CCAA individual title in a playoff over Chico’s Justin Wiles.
Stanislaus, hoping for a berth in the NCAA West Regional, will await its fate when the field is announced Friday. The Warriors, ranked 11th entering the week, are on the bubble to make the 10-team field. Coach Brandon Christianson hopes the team’s second-place CCAA finish in stroke play is good enough to extend its season.

Diablo Valley blanks MJC – Modesto Junior College (10-21, 4-13 Big 8 Conference) was limited to five hits in a 5-0 loss at home Tuesday to Diablo Valley.
The Pirates, who had won two straight, trailed 1-0 until the Vikings (15-17, 5-12) pulled away with four runs in the eighth. A three-run homer to left by John Anthon was the key blow.
Modesto starter Brandon Scott (4-5) scattered eight hits and allowed only an unearned run in six good innings. Diablo Valley, which lost to MJC in 10 innings last Friday, was led by Stephen Hantos (4-2), who blanked MJC on two hits through six innings.
The Pirates finish the three-game series at Diablo Valley on Thursday afternoon.
