College Roundup: Stanislaus State baseball swept at Dominguez Hills

The Cal State Stanislaus baseball team pounded 17 hits to no avail Sunday, as Cal State Dominguez Hills completed a three-game sweep 11-6.

The sweep was costly for the Warriors (18-18, 9-15 California Collegiate Athletic Association), who are trying to qualify for the CCAA Tournament in Stockton. Stanislaus is now 3 1/2 games out of third place, the final qualifying spot in the CCAA North, with 12 games left.

Run-scoring singles by Gino Franceschetti, Garrett Serino and Patrick Mulry erased Stanislaus’ 3-0 deficit, but the Toros (20-18, 13-13) regained control with five runs in the fifth. Franceschetti also tripled home two runs for a three-RBI day, and Michael Chavarria went 3 for 5, including a double.

Stanislaus fell 3-2 and 13-7 on Saturday, and the one-run loss came via a painful ninth-inning walkoff after the Warriors tied it in the top of the inning.

The Warriors prepare for a four-game series against San Francisco State. The Warriors are the home team Friday and Sunday and the teams travel to San Francisco for the Saturday doubleheader.

Softball

Warriors avoid sweep with walkoff – Nicolette Vizcaino’s soft line-drive single drove in Morgan Balestreri in the bottom of the eighth to give Stanislaus a 1-0 walkoff win to cap its four-game series against Sonoma State. The Seawolves (27-19, 19-14 CCAA), which won the opener 9-3, took the first three games in Turlock. Amy Pedretti was honored on Senior Day.

Singles by Balestreri and Alexus Martinez set up Vizcaino’s game-winner and ended the pitchers’ duel between Stanislaus’ Karina Callazo and Sonoma’s Brielle Vidmar. Callazo gave up six hits and a walk. In the opener, Martinez went 3 for 4 and Ruby Quiralte was 2 for 4.

The Warriors (24-25, 16-20) will play their final conference series Friday and Saturday at Cal State Monterey Bay.
