College roundup: Modesto JC baseball suffers tough losses

It’s been a tough week for the Modesto Junior College baseball team.

The Pirates’ early 3-0 lead Tuesday melted into an 8-6 loss to host Cosumnes River College, which won on Andre Gregory’s walk-off three-run homer in the ninth inning. On Monday, two unearned runs resulted in MJC’s 2-0 loss to the Hawks in a rescheduled game in Modesto following Saturday’s rainout.

On Tuesday, Modesto (8-21, 2-12 Big 8 Conference) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Carlo Del Real singled in two runs, and Jaden Alsop had an RBI groundout.

Pirates starter Jacob Corn went five scoreless innings and struck out five, but Modesto ran into trouble after his exit. Cosumnes River (23-6, 10-4) rallied for a 5-3 lead. Modesto went ahead 6-5 on Anthony Enwiya’s three-run homer in the ninth. Gregory countered with his homer for the win.

MJC’s Brandon Scott (4-4) pitched well in defeat over 5 2/3 innings Monday. He allowed two unearned runs in the first inning. Those runs decided the game, however, as the Pirates managed only four hits.

MJC, which has lost six consecutive games, will try to avert a three-game sweep by CRC on Thursday at home at 2:30 p.m.

Stanislaus’ Kron honored by CCAA – Stanislaus State right-hander Jordan Kron (6-3) was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week after he threw his fourth complete game of the season.

Kron, a graduate of East Union High School who spent one season at UC Riverside, threw a five-hitter Sunday in a 10-1 win over Cal Poly Pomona, which was ranked 29th.

On Tuesday, the Warriors (18-15) routed visiting William Jessup 15-6 in a nonconference game. Stanislaus scored five runs in the fifth and eight in the seventh.

Patrick Mulry went 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs for Stanislaus. Aldo Koutsoyanopulos also went 3 for 5 and scored three runs, while Kyle Nixon, Garrett Serino and Erik Colombini had two RBIs each.

Stanislaus is 4-0 against William Jessup this season.

Softball

Sacramento City 8, MJC 0 in Sacramento – The Panthers (24-5-1, 12-1 Big 8), ranked third in Northern California and fifth in the state, scored five in the first inning Tuesday en route to a five-inning win. Megan McCormick had the only hit for the Pirates (4-27, 0-15).

Track and field

Warriors’ Alvarado picks up league award – Stanislaus State’s Abraham Alvarado, who regained the NCAA Division II lead in the 800 meters with a time of 1 minute, 47.23 seconds, was named the CCAA Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week. The sophomore from Atwater posted the time Saturday at the Sun Angel Classic at Arizona State.
