College Roundup: Modesto JC women’s tennis reaches NorCal semifinals
The match lasted more than four hours. Four of the six singles matches went three sets. The Modesto Junior College women’s tennis team was spent as it motored home from Santa Rosa.
But the Pirates survived and advanced.
MJC (13-3) held on to beat Santa Rosa 5-4 on Tuesday in the first round of the Northern California Team Championship. The Pirates will travel to second-seeded Cañada for next Tuesday’s semifinals.
Modesto, which finished 10-2 for second place behind Fresno in the Big 8 South Conference, is seeded fifth in the playoffs. The Pirates’ trip to third-seeded Santa Rosa proved satisfying, however, when Kaitlynn Mayfield, Monica Poole and Barbara Beasley won singles matches in three sets.
Doubles victories by Parker Pilati and Vanessa Teves, and Mayfield and Poole gave Modesto the decisive points.
MJC men beaten at American River – The Pirates, the Big 8 South co-champions with Fresno, were blanked 5-0 at American River in the NorCal Team Playoffs. The match ended after the Beavers captured the clinching fifth point.
Golf
Warriors sixth at Arizona – Cal State Stanislaus enjoyed its best tournament of the season with a sixth-place finish at the Mustang Intercollegiate near Phoenix.
The Warriors shot a 54-hole team total of 8 under par, the first time this season the Warriors plunged below par. John Burke (66-73-71), 6 under for the competition, tied for third place individually to pace Stanislaus.
Next up is the Warriors’ own 43rd Hanny Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Turlock Country Club.
Pirates place second – Nick Sharp and Justin Schroyer each posted a 2-over-par 74 to lead Modesto to a second-place finish behind Reedley in the ninth Big 8 Central Valley Division Tournament at Fresno’s Sunnyside CC on Monday. The Pirates remain in second place in the league race.
Softball
Warriors return to league play – Stanislaus (21-18, 13-13), coming off an eighth-place finish in its 26-team Tournament of Champions, returns to California Collegiate Athletic Association action with back-to-back doubleheaders Friday and Saturday at Humboldt State.
The Warriors finished 4-2 for their best TOC finish in five years. The only Stanislaus team to fare better was the NCAA Tournament team of 2009, which went 5-1.
Diablo Valley tops Pirates – MJC (4-24, 0-12) trailed 6-0 after four innings and lost 6-1 at Diablo Valley (22-8, 6-6) in Big 8 action. Modesto managed three hits and scored an unearned run in the seventh.
