Stanislaus at home for series against L.A. State

The Cal State Stanislaus baseball team will try to snap a four-game losing streak during its three-game series at home against Cal State Los Angeles this weekend.

The Warriors (9-7, 2-4) meet the Golden Eagles (6-13, 5-3) for a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m. and a single game Sunday at noon.

Stanislaus dropped a doubleheader to 11th-ranked Cal State Monterey 9-1 and 4-2 this week in games that took 74 hours to complete due to rain.

Jordan Kron pitched a strong game in defeat in the second game. He threw eight innings and allowed only one earned run and struck out seven.

Pirates drop Big 8 opener – Defending champion San Joaquin Delta scored three second-inning runs, a rally that held up for a 4-3 win over Modesto in the Big 8 Conference opener for both teams at Stockton.

The Pirates (6-10, 0-1) built an early 2-0 lead on RBI hits by Carlos Lino and William Reeder before the Mustangs (15-1, 1-0) struck against starter Jacob Corn. A two-run triple by Chris Williams and a sacrifice fly by Joe Montes did the damage.

Modesto closed to 4-3 in the fourth on Reeder’s second RBI hit that brought home Mason Washington.

All the runs were earned against Corn (1-1), who struck out two in 5  1/3 innings. Evan Duran kept Modesto close with 2  2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Modesto and Delta meet at the Pirates’ ballpark Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Track

Albiani track – MJC welcomes some of Northern California’s top track talent on Friday for the annual Jack Albiani Invitational, named for the man who coached the Pirates from 1969 to ’97. Action at MJC Stadium begins with field events at 10 a.m. and running events at 11.

One of the featured athletes is MJC’s three-time defending state champion Daniel Roberts in the shot put, discus and hammer. The Pirates’ Dana Pollard placed fifth in the steeplechase last weekend at Cal State Stanislaus’ Kim Duyst Invitational. Her time of 11:42 is No. 1 in the state.

Randolph stands out – Cal State Stanislaus’ Gary Randolph won two of three throwing events at the Duyst Invitational. Randolph tossed a personal best 205-8, third-best all-time at Stanislaus, to win the hammer. He also topped the field in the shot put (54-2  1/2 ) and was second in the discus.

Other Stanislaus winners were Deon Pinder in the triple jump (48-1  3/4 ), Anthony Riggins in the 100 (11.45), Noveleen Thiara in the 400 (50.49) and the 4x400 relay team (3:26.08).

The women were led by victories by Channing Wilson in the javelin (153-9) and Denise Reis in the 800 (2:21.08).

Basketball

Sanders-Curry makes second team – Stanislaus junior Cassidy Sanders-Curry was named to the All-CCAA second team. Ana Burch, Reana Hardin and Riley Holladay earned honorable mention in the voting by league coaches. It marked the first time during Stanislaus’ tenure in the CCAA that four players were recognized.

Bayne honored –The Warriors’ Christian Bayne, a sophomore from Bakersfield, earned CCAA second-team honors after he averaged 15.2 points per game.

Golf

Pirates second – MJC, led by John Morshead’s 72 at Lemoore, moved into overall second place in the Big 8 with a runner-up finish during the league’s fifth tournament. Nick Sharp posted a 73.

Tennis

MJC blanks Reedley – The Pirates (5-4, 4-1), led by Mike Lopez and Nathan Saragoza, blanked Reedley 9-0 at the MJC courts.
