College roundup: Stanislaus State basketball teams fall in Los Angeles

The Cal State Stanislaus men’s basketball team went from CCAA tournament hopefuls to being eliminated, falling to Cal State Los Angeles 68-62 Thursday night.

Kyle Gouveia and Christian Bayne scored 20 points each to lead the Warriors, but Duce Zaid carried the Golden Eagles by scoring 23 points as Stanislaus dropped to 7-17 overall and 6-13 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Cal State L.A. improved to 9-17 overall and 8-11 in CCAA play to snag the eighth and final tournament berth.

After last weekend’s dramatic home wins over Humboldt State and Cal Poly Pomona, the Warriors could have qualified for the CCAA tournament with a win Thursday.

However, a slow start and finish against the Golden Eagles led to the defeat. The Warriors end their season at home against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7:30 p.m Saturday.

Women’s basketball

Cal State L.A. 76, Stanislaus State 59 in Los Angeles – The Warriors couldn’t recover from a turnover-filled first half Thursday.

Alysa Valentine led Stanislaus (16-9, 12-7 CCAA) with 19 points and seven rebounds, and Cassidy Sanders-Curry added 14 points.

The Warriors secured a home game for the CCAA tournament after Sonoma State beat host Cal State San Bernardino 57-48 on Friday night. Stanislaus plays Cal State Dominguez Hills in its regular-season finale Saturday at Fitzpatrick Arena. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.

Tennis

Chabot 5, Modesto JC 4 in Modesto – No. 1 singles player Mike Lopez and No. 3 Nathan Saragoza each delivered straight-set victories for the Pirates, then teamed for a doubles victory in a a nonconference matchup Thursday. Modesto next plays Tuesday at Sacramento City in a Big 8 South matchup.
