Stanislaus basketball: Another overtime win for Warriors

Working overtime resulted in a major payback for the Cal State Stanislaus men’s basketball team.

The Warriors, 24 hours after outlasting Humboldt State in three overtimes, upset 20th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona in OT 80-68 on Saturday night at Fitzpatrick Arena for their most successful weekend of the season.

Stanislaus (7-16, 6-12) sits two games out of eighth place with two games left in the California Collegiate Athletic Association race. The Warriors face long odds to reach the CCAA tournament, but the thrilling sweep kept them alive.

Kyle Gouveia starred for Stanislaus against Pomona (20-6, 13-6) with a career-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. Christian Bayne also had 21 points and dished out 10 assists.

Pomona led 52-45, but Stanislaus scored 10 straight points, six by Gouveia, to lead 55-52 with 4:51 left. The Broncos forced the overtime on Quentin Taylor’s three-pointer and a free throw by Jordan Faison.

Stanislaus blitzed Pomona with a 12-0 run, ignited by a Stephen Evans three-pointer, in the extra period. Carlson added a three-pointer, and the Warriors converted 6 of 7 free throws.

Vondel Faniel pulled down 15 rebounds as the Warriors enjoyed a huge 47-28 edge. Bayne had eight rebounds.

Stanislaus is 3-1 in overtime games this season.

Women hard to beat at home – Stanislaus’ admirable play at home this season continued with a 76-65 win over Cal Poly Pomona. The Warriors (16-8, 12-6) are 10-1 at Fitzpatrick.

Alysa Valentine keyed a balanced offense with 12 points, and Riley Holladay scored 11 points with nine rebounds. Jasmine Washington scored nine points, and Aleseana Whitney, Ana Burch and Cassidy Sanders-Curry each had eight. Stanislaus netted 11 three-pointers and forced 21 Pomona turnovers.

Stanislaus can nail down a home berth in the first round of the CCAA tournament by winning one of its final two games.
