Local digest: Modesto JC soccer star Sonoma-bound
Jenna Viss, one of the stars in Modesto Junior College’s march to the women’s soccer state Final Four last fall, will continue her career at Sonoma State.
Viss was ranked sixth in the state with 22 goals, five during MJC’s NorCal playoff wins over Las Positas and San Francisco. Modesto finished 18-5-2.
Viss will join a strong Sonoma State program that went 14-3-3, won the California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season title and reached the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2015. Sonoma, ranked 24th in Division II last season, has gone 57-16-9 the last four seasons.
“Emiria (Sonoma State coach Emiria Salzmann Dunn) runs a fantastic program,” MJC coach Steve Aristotelous said. “All of her teams work hard and are winners. Jenna will be a great addition and will thrive under her tutelage. She has grown tremendously here and will continue to grow as a person and soccer player at Sonoma.”
