Warriors’ men win in triple-OT

The Cal State Stanislaus men probably wondered what it would take to end a nightmarish 11-game losing streak.

The Warriors found out Friday night – three overtimes.

Stanislaus outlasted Humboldt State 108-100 in the season’s most thrilling California Collegiate Athletic Association game to date at Fitzpatrick Arena.

Christian Bayne scored a career-high 27 points and Vondel Faniel netted 21 – also a personal best – to lead the Warriors (6-16, 5-12 CCAA).

Joey Bennett, who also had a career high with 19 points, nearly made a buzzer-beating layup that would have won it in regulation. In the second overtime, Bennett hit a three-pointer with 16 seconds left to tie 90-90 and force the third OT.

Tim Thymes started an 8-0 run in the final OT with a layup. Back-to-back three-pointers by Bayne and Stephen Evans gave Stanislaus a 98-90 lead.

Kyle Gouveia had 13 points, featuring 9 of 11 free throws. Stanislaus was 28 for 40 from the line.

Malik Morgan led the Lumberjacks (17-7, 11-7) with 22 points.

Stanislaus State women 93, Humboldt State 65 – The Warriors turned 26 Humboldt State turnovers into 45 points in the CCAA victory.

The Warriors (15-8, 11-6 CCAA) snapped a three-game losing streak and improved their chances for a home appearance in the first round of the CCAA tournament.

Cassidy Sanders-Curry had another double double with 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Alysa Valentine scored 20 points for Stanislaus.

Stanislaus hit 12 of 21 three-point shots, four by Valentine and three by Sanders-Curry, as the Warriors notched their ninth win in 10 home games.

The Warriors were credited with 16 steals against Humboldt State (12-13, 9-9). A 17-0 run bridging the first and second quarters put Stanislaus ahead to stay.
