Modesto JC softball rips De Anza for first win
Megan McCormick homered and Spencer Bronken and Rachel Thomason drove in two runs apiece Tuesday afternoon to lead Modesto Junior College to its first softball win, 11-3 over De Anza.
Leadoff hitter Haylie Prater and No. 2 Nicole Vasquez each went 3 for 5 to spark the MJC offense. Alexis Flores pitched a complete game and didn’t allow an earned run.
The Pirates (1-3) will meet Los Medanos in a doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m. at the MJC West park.
Golf
Stanislaus places sixth in Vista – Ash Patel placed in the top 20 to lead Cal State Stanislaus to a sixth-place finish in the opening event of the spring, the Fujikura Invitational in Vista. Cal State San Marcos was the host.
Patel finished with a 10-over-par 226 for 54 holes after his closing 74 for a tie for 17th on the individual chart. Chico State’s Lee Gearhart was the medalist after he won a playoff over San Marcos’ Dale Smith. Both finished at 3-under 213. San Marcos edged top-ranked Chico State by one stroke in the team standings.
Stanislaus’ Michael Mencaccy recovered from a slow start and finished with a 74 for 14-over 230, one stroke ahead of teammates John Burke and Jordan Koelewyn. Chad Kubes rounded out the Warriors’ lineup at 232.
Shadowridge Golf Club played to an average of 77.65 strokes per round in the field of 78. The Warriors compete at Cal State San Bernardino’s Coyote Classic on Feb. 22-23.
