Local Digest: Stanislaus baseball gets even with Fresno Pacific

The Cal State Stanislaus baseball team concluded Homecoming Weekend by getting even.

The Warriors (5-2), burned by back-to-back walkoff losses Friday at Fresno Pacific, answered with a doubleheader sweep 9-0 and 10-4 Saturday night at Warrior Field.

Jordan Kron threw a gem in the opener, striking out seven and allowing only four hits in eight solid innings. Andrew Mallon’s three-run homer over the wall in right in the third inning put Stanislaus in charge. Michael Chavarria added a solo homer to left in the fifth.

In the nightcap, Nick Ippolito went 3-for-4 and leadoff batter Scott Stetson reached base four straight times. Freshman pitcher Micah Hall contributed 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief to earn his first collegiate save.

Stanislaus batted .327 for the night while Warrior pitchers limited Fresno Pacific to only 11 hits and four runs.

The Warriors welcomed back the 1976 team which won the first of two straight NCAA Division III titles.

Stanislaus will conclude the five-game series Tuesday night at Fresno.

Softball

Warriors split at Las Vegas – Two big innings propelled the Warriors to a 7-4 win over Concordia and a split of its games during the second day of the Desert Stinger run by Montana State Billings.

Bryanna Menor keyed a four-run fourth with a two-run single that followed two singles and a Ruby Quiralte run-scoring double. After Concordia drew even, Stanislaus (2-1) responded in the fifth with a two-run pinch-hit single by Alex Rowell.

Cheyenne Harper got the win in the opener with three innings of relief work.

In the late game, New Mexico Highlands scored six runs in the sixth to end the game 11-3.

Basketball

Pirates beaten at Sierra – Modesto Junior College (9-13, 3-7) fell behind 43-34 at halftime and dropped its third straight game, an 84-81 Big 8 Conference loss at Sierra. Zack Gonzales enjoyed his second straight good game by connecting on five of MJC’s 14 three-pointers en route to 24 points. Brennan Pope and Michael Hatfield had 14 points apiece and Mason Washington finished with 13.

Sierra (12-11, 8-2), paced by Antonio Lewis’ 30 points on 12-of-17 shooting, moved into a tie for first with Cosumnes River, which lost to Sacramento 110-77.

Modesto welcomes Santa Rosa to MJC Gym on Tuesday night at 5:30.

Fresno torches Columbia – Fresno (22-6, 8-1), which suffered a rare Central Valley Conference loss last month against Sequoias, regained its swagger by bombing the Claim Jumpers 120-70 on the Rams’ court. The Claim Jumpers (15-9, 5-4) sit in fourth place in the CVC.

Tennis

Warriors over Dominican – The Stanislaus women, energized by hard-fought wins by doubles pairs Jaella Conway and Cassidy Ferrell and Analyssa Tallas and Ebone Qualls, opened the season with a 6-3 win over Dominican at San Rafael.

No. 1 singles J’Ana Diamond won her match along with other singles victors Ferrell, Qualls and Tallas.

MJC men beaten – MJC, minus No. 1 singles Mike Lopez, lost to an experienced American River team 9-0.
